You have a good point although you have to remember that you guys (you and @Kerleyfries) are talking to someone who weighs anywhere between 70-100 pounds more than you. The same dieting principals aren't going to apply across the board. I have tried a lot of different approaches and been very patient with them, so I know what works for me. I also know the difference between water weight and fat.

ETA: I will never "be lean," unless I quit lifting weights altogether and went on an extreme deficit diet for a year, and that's not in the cards!

Fair enough. Do you have a pretty sedentary life style or are you super active other than working out?

Desk job, brotha. Desk job...:anonymous:. Work 50-60 hours a week then sit in class for another 15-20. Although I am pretty active on the weekends, fishing, hunting, etc.

Don't sleep...which could be contributing to my metabolic issues. 6 hours is the MOST I ever get when I am not on vacation.

Hey guys. I'm trying to get back into it after years away. I have spent the last month back at the gym doing weights with a minimal amount of cardio. I've been going at least 4-5 times a week. I haven't taken supplements since back in college. I wanted to see if you guys have advice for me on what to take and what to do. I want to lose a little weight and mainly turn some of this fat into muscle. I'm 37 (38 on Sunday actually), I'm only 5'6" and weight about 192.

    What would you guys do?
    Thanks ahead of time.

I am a classic endo, through and through, except I am not all that short. Anyways, I appreciate the advice. Right now, I am gonna keep lifting until I wanna puke, keto til I get to where I wanna be, then slowly re-up the carb intake to see where I want to be for a combo of strength gains and minimal fat gains. My issue this time around is that I didn't slowly reintroduce carbs, just jumped right back in to where I was at before keto.

Preworkout. The caffeine will help kickstart your metabolism and help with the workout. Diet is going to be the biggest part of it though.

Preworkout? Can you give me an idea of what diet route you might take and what supplements?

At the end of the day, consistency is key. It's what separates gainz from dyel. So good luck.

I think that is the case with private (non chain) gyms. The only thing in my area is planet fitness, lifetime fitness, Anytime Fitness, and crossfit gyms. I doubt any of those would allow outside trainers who aren't on payroll...

Figure out your tdee with an online calculator and then eat at a ~500calorie deficit from that. Try to eat clean ie chicken, fish, turkey, lean beef, veggies, rice, etc... You know, bland shit. I've never had to focus on losing weight so I may not be the best to help you on this subject.

I feel your pain, man. Law school + working full-time fucking blows.

Find out your TDEE with an online calculator.

Subtract 500 calories from that number and make a diet with about 1 g of protein per pound of body weight, between 50-100 g fat, and fill the rest in with carbs.

Follow a good lifting program like Doug's 4 DAy Split

Supplements aren't necessary, but protein powder is the cheapest form of protein and it's more convenient than trying to eat a boatload of chicken. Also, a caffeinated pre-workout helps get you moving before a workout. That's all you really need.

At the end of the day, diet + gym time = goals.

    Same.

Ah, that sucks. locally owned gyms FTW

I've just never heard of that before :notsure:
My advice is to get on a high protein diet. Buy whey protein as a supplement. That's the only supplement you need. Stop drinking sodas and eating simple carbs. Keep lifting weights and do cardio if you like.

I love my coffee in the morning. Do I still need a caffeinated pre-work out or can I use some other "pre workout"?

I wouldn't if you're trying to lose weight for right now. You can get a pre workout that has a small amount of creatine in it if you really want it...

What time of day do you lift?
