    Random question here.

Finally broke the 1,000 mile mark so I revved it up a bit. Is partial throttle at higher rpm not linear in power delivery for anyone else? It's not as noticeable at WOT but it's almost got an old school VTEC feel in power delivery with a bit of a hesitation/surge.

I now understand what rev hang is too. It's a truck though, so who cares, I so rarely go above 3,000 rpm.

Once you get used to driving it, all other trucks feel weird. :)

I don't know about partial vs WOT, but I do know there is a surge in the mid 3k RPM range when the truck reaches max torque. This truck produces max torque in the mid 3's and max horsepower at redline.

Rev hang will occur at any RPM, it's more dependent on pushing the clutch in while throttle is still being applied. Either by your foot or waiting slightly too long and having the engine fire off the injectors again. I found out that is what was happening on my long drive and making it take a good 4-5 seconds before the RPM's would even drop by 500. I was getting lazy and shifting slower after driving for hours.

I fixed mine by silicone spraying where the push rod that connects the pedal to the master cylinder enters the master cylinder then spinning the piece around and pushing in the pedal a few times. Spinning it is important as it distributes the oil around the edges. The spray didn't fix it until I did that.

Went from Ga to the east most part of the country in Maine. This truck made it too easy. Got around 21 mpg average for the trip and not one problem out of the transmission. Manual for the win!

Decided today I couldnt take the auto's shifting issues and that it was making an otherwise enjoyable truck unenjoyable. So ended up making the trip to the dealer and filled out all the paperwork to replace it with the manual. So, should be back in a manual trans. vehicle in another couple weeks.

Here's a pic of my old Toyota from the early 90's. I bought this truck new. It was my first 4x4, and it was awesome, but it shifted like a tractor and was gutless compared to my new one.

Ha you think that's gutless, at least it had a V6. My 4 cyl was lucky to do 0-60 in under 20 seconds. Awesome trucks though!

Lots of dead stuff was thrown in the back of this one too over 200K miles. I loved that truck.

can anyone offer advice on breaking in a third gen v6 4x4 MT? I likely will be picking up one 1,500 miles away and was curious how I should drive it home (mostly interstate). Would like to hear about RPM, shifting, etc.

not sure what the manual has to say as I don't have a copy

Don't use cruise control or stay in any one gear or rpm range for a prolonged period of time. At least that's what I did. I also tried to keep the shifts around 2500 rpm. Seemed to work for me. I now only shift far above 3000rpm and the truck is very lively and I get great mpg average above 20. Worked great for me don't know if its needed but I did it anyway. Also changed the engine oil at 1200miles. It had your typical new engine metal in it.

It took the better part of 5000 miles to break mine in. Had trouble in the beginning squeezing any horse power out. All my Tacoma's have been like that. Tight engines.... After 5k the shifter is much looser and the 1st/ rev closeness is less annoying. Still annoyed that 5th gear seems to be out in right field. I have to lean a little to engage. This is my first 6 speed and I think my favorite gear is 4th as it seems to be the tallest gear with the best range. I've gotten pretty comfortable with it now.

I wouldn't have bought my truck unless it was manual. I'm so glad Toyota still offers the manual option! When I buy new I know where to go!

Don't be afraid to use 2nd on starts as 1st is pretty tight and makes you shift almost immediately on a new one. After a few thousand the range on 1st gets a little better. I found myself intentionally winding out gears in the beginning so I could get a feel for the power curve.

I find I have to be rolling to use 2nd for starts. trying it from a dead stop lugs the motor too much..IMO
