Depends on what your using the gun for. We hunt pigs with dogs and the 30-30 works great. It's not overkill when your up close (15 feet) with the dogs and still has enough power to shoot out to 150 yards when the dogs blow several hogs out of the brush and they all scatter.

I agree, the 30-30 isn't a world-beater, but it's a damn handy cartridge. Especially when you load it with modern powders and bullets. Anything from varmints to elk, with the right load. I use an old beater 30-30 Winchester '94 as my truck gun, and I've got no complaints with its performance inside of 200 yards or so. Hard to beat a short 30-30 lever gun for hunting thick woods (which is mostly what you find, around here)

Im not saying it wont kill a deer and of course if you hand load you can get decent performance out of it, I just feel like its the mcdonalds of rounds, yeah they sell food but I can't think of one thing they do that anyone else doesn't do better. even with factory loads with the leverevolution by hornady which is basically a +P it nearly hits the numbers of a good .243 deer round but still plummets immediately after that; and yeah its hand to have a short gun in the woods but not as handy (or as fast with a follow up shot either) as a .44 mag with about 6" barrel, that in close range will do about the same or better than the 30-30, and a shotgun would fit the bill as good or better also (especially a home defense shotgun if length is that big a deal) I've just never seen any advantage to the round over any other legitimate hunting cal is all, and that's one reason I doubt ill ever own one unless a long lost uncle ive never met leaves one to me in his will or something.

...but it's for his grandkids to teach about hunting when they're 10. 30-30 is THE round for that. They might grow into their own favorite caliber, they'll always be able to use a 30-30.

No 10 year old wants to shoot a 44mag, 12ga slug, or 45-70.

Not unless you want them to develop a serious flinch.

My first rifle was a Ruger Mini-14 which I had at ten years of age. My first elk rifle was a 7.92 war surplus Mauser. I was thirteen when I got that.

And a semi-automatic .223 gives you a gentle nudge. A 45-70 whacks you with a hammer. Best way for a kid to develop a flinch is to start them out with a gun that actually kicks. Then they're always afraid of it and you have to break them of that habit. Better that they never develop it at all. :notsure:
