Shouldn't this be on the GM boards?

It just sucks that GM is already changing engine and transmission and Toyota after every single person started complaining about the transmission they came up with the TSB a month ago. I did the TSB about 2 weeks ago and the truck feels better but still feels sluggish sometimes. Don't think the issue is with the engine but the actual transmission they used.

I'm at least happy toyota will (hopefully) stick to the same engine throughout the entire generation. I'd be pissed if they did major upgrades to it after only a year or two leaving me stuck with the puny engine nobody else wants anymore.

Their sales aren't hurting right now, so there isn't much inspiration for a major change. Toyota is more of a slow and steady company, using proven technology, while the others seem to invest a little more in R&D for their trucks.

completely agree with you. I think the 3.5l Engine is a very good engine. Just wish the transmission or at least the shift patterns would change a bit so the truck feels more responsive

Toyota had a huge first few months this year and now they are selling less units per month than they were a year ago. Meanwhile the GM twins keep selling more each month as they crank out output at their assembly plants.
We are likely stuck with the 3.5 until 2026, which sucks considering how much pushback Toyota has gotten for the lackluster and lethargic 3.5 liter.

The problem isn't the physical transmission itself. Not sure why people think that. It's the programming that controls the shift points. When you start seeing threads that the transmissions are blow out then you can talk about the transmissions and how Toyota built a shitty one. Infact if you see any failures my guess would be majority of those were ones that were pretty low on fluid from the factory and had some miles out on them before being filled properly. The truck was designed to get as much fuel economy as possible. That's why it's going to feel a little sluggish especially at low rpm.

I understand but I drove the GMC twins and they do not feel sluggish like the Taco feels and they have about the same if not better MPG. I have always been a toyota guy and that is why i decided for the taco but I have to admit that the GMC twins engine/transmission combo feels a lot peppier that the Taco combo

I agree with what most are saying. It's definitely the shift points. My manual feels great even with heavy KO2s. And I'm coming from a V8 4Runner

It's not a tranny problem. It's a axle ratio problem. The engine simply does not make enough power to pull the truck at the lower rpm's that the truck is geared at.

They also don't use a auto to Atkins cycle and their shift programming is different. The 3.5 doesn't have much low end torque

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
moved to the 'general automotive' section where it belongs...seems to be a recurrence w/ colorado/ridgeline threads.

I honestly don't think this Tacoma will run for 10 years without a redesign.

The 3rd Gen was basically a "hurry up and DO something" revamp of the Tacoma in response to new competition.

When the new Ranger, Wrangler pickup, and Nissan Navarra all come onto the scene and start to take a bite out of Tacoma sales, they will get serious and do a real revamp.

Toyota did nothing to the basic Tacoma for over 10 years because they didn't have to do anything to maintain sales.

That era is about to be over in the face of new and markedly improved competition from other manufacturers.

I completely agree and have said it before. Toyota will have to jump back on the 5 year redesign cycle like they and everyone else does with automobiles
