Well I kinda figured that if the truck is rolling down hill in gear at somewhere near idle, ignition on, the alternator should be providing said computer with somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 v if not full 14V. Haven't had to try it yet on anything newer.

Didn't want to get involved here, but a good reason for manual? I enjoy driving them and learning the skills that go along with that.

IMO Manuals are the only way to drive. I have never willingly owned a automatic. I hope I never will, but that's not up for discussion yet.
I test drove the OR in auto. And my god what a miserable slush box it is. If it was only available as an AT I would have gone a bought a Fronter.
And to the point about "Modern Sportscars" using AT? The real ones (super cars) don't. They use computer controlled manual transmissions. Or something like that. Ultimately a computer can better control the shifting, clutch, revmatching, etc better than our feeble monkey brains can. Or they use DCTs.
However the real Enemy we should be working against is the CVT. Those things are an affront to all whom an vehicle is more than a simple mover of people.

Long time lurker here, recently got an account in anticipation of buying a 2017 OR DCSB with a MT. I'm surprised no one has said anything about the gear ratio being beefier on the MT than the auto. Is that taboo around these parts now? Also can anyone confirm that the TSB for the MT fixed the issue that people were having being stuck in a high gear after being on the highway for long periods of time? Thanks in advance.

lol bunny slopes, that's cute. You've just got to know how to drive one properly.

If you don't have a lot of XP with a MT, stick with auto.
But I do know people who came from MT with cars and didn't want it in their truck. But i've also seen those same people fail on hill climbs because of their AT where I was able to do it just fine.

IMO MT ftw, it's saved my ass quite a bit.
Oh, if you happen to wheel hard and get yourself into a pucker spot good luck getting that AT to properly shift or even shift in gear for that matter.

I'll +1 the jump packs. We've got a few; a 1 or 2 time use mini back no bigger than a phone and a few of the full size battery packs. They have seriously been a life saver.

Could care less about the argument of which is better. I'm not that old but where I came from you don't buy a sports car with an auto and you sure as hell don't buy an off road vehicle with an auto.

Now that's just me. I prefer it. Sports cars and more off road oriented vehicles are "DRIVERS" vehicles and should be equipped as such. So the driver has the most control possible.

It's just a lot lot more fun and satisfying to me. I drove my auto silverado for years. It was great. Basically a Cadillac on the highway and could take up some decent diff off road and hunting. But I see the tacoma as different.

Just thought I'd throw in my $0.02... My first truck was an '84 Toyota 4x4 MT and I did a lot of off-roading with it. My second vehicle was an '01 Nissan Xterra 4x4 MT and it did some off-roading (less than the Toyota). My current vehicle is a '16 TRD OR AT. Why the switch to AT? My off-roading is reduced to Pismo and easy to medium trails; my days of hardcore rock crawling and creek beds are behind me. The Toy is also my daily driver and spends about an hour to an hour and a half per day moving me through NorCal Bay area traffic; the constant in/out of the clutch in traffic was very unpleasant...

TL;DR if I was still doing serious off-road it would be a manual; they are easier to work with off road and probably more reliable (see the wonderful spelling out of this in post #16 by @archerm3). Unfortunately I need a daily driver that is pleasant in daily commute traffic and can still handle mid-level off-road duties so I bought an AT.

One more benefit to the manual is that nowadays, probably 90+% of the thief population would be unable to drive it if they tried to steal it.

Another benefit is that the wife can't drive it.

Oh wait, did I type that about my wife?

    Kidding, kidding!

    Maybe.....

I could be wrong, but if you're referencing why get a 2016 MT, it may be because of the gear searching issues many people are complaining about with the AT. With a manual, you can keep it in the proper gear, or so I would think. And I love my 6 speed in my '06.

And to add some more detail to your 4th point, I drive lots of rural twisty roads in middle Tn. and can do most of them using zero brakes.
3rd gear can take you down from 50mph effortlessly going into a turn and take your right back to 50 coming out of that turn. It's freaking awesome

The only way to get the Access Cab with a V6/6MT in Canada is to get the TRD Offroad.

    A manual is just fun!

I wish I could trade my v6 auto AC TRD OR for your Canada version with the MT.

    all tore up already
Because you can control engine power and wheel torque seperately with a manual which is ideal offroad...

I believe that the manual only comes in the OR or Sport (I originally tried to get a stick in an SR5 and I was never able to build that combination). I am really not sure what is being asked here anyway. No offense but are you looking for some type of validation or affirmation on which transmission to buy?
Ignore all the advice and input and buy what you want. I have the feeling you already know what you want but are looking for confirmation that you are making the right decision. It's your truck get what you want, not what people think you should buy. There are all kinds of opinions on what is the best transmission for off roading, commuting, hauling or sitting in your barn and looking at, and these opinions are both right and wrong.
There are always going to be arguments on what is better for a particular situation. What is best for you is the best transmission to go with.
