Well between the time they called me and the time I was able to get to the dealership they found out that a field engineer was actually on site.

They explained everything to him and he said to replace the differential. So that's what it stands at right now, no ETA on arrival but it could take weeks.

We should all paint stripes on our trucks to represent how many diff's our trucks have killed. Aren't a real 3rd gener until you have a diff kill count.

Props to the dealer though for actually providing good service.

Not a problem for me at all.
Have a 75K warranty, if and when it has it, guess what.
Brand new differential and move on.
    Problem easily solved.
Its not like this light howling is rendering trucks useless. I ran on whining diffs for 75K

Doesn't make it useless. Just hits folks the wrong way when it happens on a brand new truck. I think Toyota will find a good fix though.:fingerscrossed:

Thanks to the video @smitty99 posted, I just started noticing this on my TRD OR. It doesn't sound like a real solution has been found, as people have received new rear diffs only to have the problem come back up. My question is should I open a case with Toyota corporate so they have an additional record of this issue? I'm reluctant to contact the dealership go through the hassle of a getting a new rear diff if there's no guarantee of a long-term fix.

Get it documented and open a case. You don't have to let them put a new diff. in, it's your truck. Just tell Corporate that you want it on record and want to wait awhile to see what Toyota comes up with.

I was gonna say "Damn! You've been driving the shit out of that Taco!"

If you take it to the dealer to have it checked out, you might be able to squeeze the Platinum Warranty out of Toyota for free. Several of us in this thread have done it, myself included.

Ok thanks man ill see what i can do thanks. Just out of curiousity would maybe getting better aftermarket rear diff gears fix the problem....if they even have any. Cause if the problem they have is the quality why not give a possible upgrade 2D's for a double dose of pimpin

No guarantee of this because it could be something just external to the differential making the noise especially since replacing a differential doesn't seem to affect it much

Its not normal, all you need is a dealership willing to work with you. I went from a dealership not even trying to look at the issue because "The Tacoma is bulletproof" (I kid you not) to another dealership that took less than 5 minutes on a test drive to say "Yep, thats not normal at all." New diff on the way.

aero90 I agree finding a willing dealership a warranty claim does not pay the tech. the same as cash ticket that's why the mechanic does not want spend a lot time on it

The diagnosis part they don't get paid for (true regardless of warranty or not). Warranty repairs they get paid for, but I believe at a lower rate than normal.
