I have a 99 4cyl 5sp 4x4. About a month ago or so I started having trouble shifting into reverse week later or so i notice on the freeway it was having a hard time with 4th in fact a couple tie i had to go back to 3rd or just went straight to 5th. Wouldnt happen everytime i drove. Week or so later in fact it sremed to be shifting fine at time. Well of course im at an intersection lights green and she doesnt want to go into 1st in fact i kind of forced the issue. So soon after that 2nd gear got in on the fun but third and fifth were ok. Im a poor person so taking it to a mechanic? So i asked my ftirnd to look at it to just give a rough idea his mind was set on the clutch knowing the cost of replacing a clutch i turned to the internet to get some ideas of other possible easier cheaper repairs to at least check out first. So i ask my friend who is reluntant to look at these other possibilities cuz his mind is set on clutch. Like four days later i fanally dexide its up to me so i go out to my truck start looking at it the clutch under the hood looking fir my trannyfluid dip stick and he decides to come out to show me its the clutch. I mention the clutch petal could be the culprit he doesnt agree. Well while im looking for the movement when u press the clutch pedal doen i notice the container holding the tranny fluid is bouncing up and down not suppose to do that. So he looks at tje pedal noticed a bolt was missing easy fix. Well he fixed that but now my truck goes into gear but wont go, wont drive can any one help me please.

The container actually holds brake fluid for the master clutch cylinder. When you press the clutch pedal, the fluid in the clutch master cylinder pushes the fluid to the clutch slave cylinder. The slave cylinder then extends to push the clutch fork. In the middle of the fork is a throw-out bearing. The throw-out bearing then presses against the clutch springs to move the clutch away from the flywheel. Your transmission does not contain transmission fluid like an automatic transmission does. It actually has gear fluid in it, the same fluid that is in your rear axle.

What's the level of the fluid in the container?

It's sounds like you may have to adjust the clutch pedal. Here are a few links on how to check and adjust the pedal.

There is also an inspection plate at the bottom of the bell housing you can remove. It will allow you to look at the clutch to check for wear.

There is a PDF file attached with the info.
