    Hey All,

I've been stalking on this forum for the better part of a year, so I figure it's time to jump in. This will be a little long winded (slow day at work), so please excuse me in advance. Last year I picked up a totally mint "salvage title" supercharged 2nd gen for an absolute steal:

    20160514_134309.jpg

The title was branded due to "owner refusal", meaning it had been in a wreck, and the insurance company got a quote from a dealer body shop (in this case around $7 grand) and went ahead and repaired the car. After the repairs they presented it back to the owner, and after driving it around for a bit the owner decided it just wasn't the same, so they wanted to cash out. The insurance company paid the owner for the vehicle, took possession, and sent it to auction. As soon as the insurance company takes possession, the title is branded - I was lucky enough to have the funds on hand to pick it up for ~12k less than it would sell for with a regular title!

Anyway, since then it's had a full dealer inspection and a full 4-wheel alignment - Nobody could tell it had been in an accident.

For those who are really curious or find themselves in a similar situation when it comes to buying a salvage title car, here's what you can do. Keep in mind I was crazy enough to buy this completely sight unseen, but here's where I got the confidence:

    - Buy the carfax and look very specifically for an accident report or police report. Once you have this, google it. This number will likely yield an actual police report that you may be able to buy/download.

    - Use this police report to figure out exactly what happened in the accident, and you can even do a search for the previous owner. I got lucky and the previous owner had a public number listed (he owns a lexus/toyota shop), and I just called him up. Be careful though, I believe it's illegal to get ahold of them using the private number listed in the police report...

    - Create an account on the Toyota website and punch in the VIN for the car as though it's your own. If the previous owner didn't make an account and link in the VIN already, you can check out the service records. Since the insurance company had the car repaired at the dealer after the accident, I was able to determine every single part that was replaced, right down to the clips that hold on the splash shields.

    - Ask for every imaginable picture from the person/auction site selling the car. I was nerdy enough to ask for pictures at the SAME distance from the car on the left and right sides, just so I could physically measure the panel gaps with a ruler on the screen... lol.

Anyway, enough of that crap. Here's the mods that I know the previous owner installed:

    - URD 2.7inch pulley

    - lightweight flywheel (no idea on the brand)

    - extremely heavy duty clutch, presumably URD (it's similar to the clutch weight on my mother in laws RAM 3500 diesel)

    - Dough Thorley long tube headers

    - URD/TRD short shift

    - Aftermarket speakers with modified OEM stereo

I got very lucky here, since I would never have been able to install most of these myself - I'm pretty low on time and available workspace/equipment.

Here's the mods I would LIKE to install or have plans to install:

    - Full URD exhaust from the Y-pipe back

    - CAI (mostly to increase supercharger noise)

    - AFR and Boost gauges

Now, I have concerns about the CAI and aftermarket exhaust, given that I'm at sea level, already running the 2.7" pulley, and I don't know if the previous owner upgraded the fuel pump or not  Which brings me to my questions:

    - Is there a quick way to figure out if I've got an upgraded fuel pump WITHOUT much effort, IE dropping the tank and actually examining the unit?

    - Would the aftermarket exhaust lean out my AFRs at all?

Feel free to ask any questions about anything in here :)

Thanks man :) It's definitely still clean since it spends most of it's time in the garage lol. I'll be throwing on new wheels and a pelfreybuilt rear bumper in a couple weeks as well.

    OP-
Upgrading the Exhaust and Intake is a surefire way to add some power with forced induction. I would highly suggest the URD CAI and URD 3" exhaust (what I'm running) and URD Y Pipe. Just remember that with the Long tube headers, if you replace the Y pipe you're gonna have no cats left, so maybe go with URD Spec U exhaust as it adds a resonator and muffler to tone down the rasp, but it does sound a tad ricey (In my opinion).

Easiest way to see if a URD pump was installed is to look at the fuel tank. URD Fuel pumps add an external fuel filter, so right in front of the tank should be an added loop of fuel line and a fuel filter (looks like a can with fuel line going in at each side).

I highly suggest a AFR and Boost gauge asap to see where you're sitting, the TRD reflash tune is very very rich usually but once you start adding mods it usually evens out a tad. Having the 2.7 pulley on there will throw some more air inside so your mixture might lean out a little.

Now then, once you've added all the power mods you can, you really should get some sort of tuner to fix your tune. If you look at my build I've got pretty much the same thing, except I'm still on the 2.85 pulley and waiting for URD's UCON to come out for the 2012+ trucks then I'll be adding the 2.7 pulley and probably a 7th injector. Prior to the fuel pump install i noticed in 4th under a full pull on the highway, sometimes I noticed a flat spot in the power band where it just felt like it ran out of power but I had plenty of RPMs left, I think that was due to the fuel pump reaching max duty cycle. Now that I swapped the stock pump out for a URD replacement, that flat spot is gone and I felt a bit more power there, BUT my AFR's went back down to the low 10s.

Prior to installing pump, I had an AFE CAI on there and the stock pulley and my AFR gauge would peg out at 10, so I know it was going down in to the 9s, which is stupid rich.

Nice! I'm glad there's an easy way to check on the fuel pump. Yeah, it's sounding like getting the gauges on order is the first step here. I have no equipment to tap into the exhaust for the probe, but that shouldn't be a huge part of the labor I hope. Appreciate the honest opinion on the URD exhaust as well - It sounds great from the videos, but it seems pretty hard to make a V6 sound non-ricey, so I'll believe it when I see it :)

I know the previous owner checked on the AFRs after the 2.7 install, but I didn't get any details. What can you even do as far as a tune on the 2012+ at this point? Aren't the ECUs prettymuch on full lockdown?

Totally true - It's also nearly impossible to get a bank loan on a vehicle with a salvage title. I'm hoping I never have to sell it (hah), but I'm banking on the Tacos extreme popularity in the Anchorage area to make a sale if need be. I would definitely not make any money though. I doubt there's many people out there willing to take out an unsecured loan in the 10-20G range :/

If you have a drill gun, look up non weld bungs, something like this, so all you have to do is drill a hole and you can install the probe/sensor without welding-

Yeah I got the URD Mark 3 3" exhaust because of the sound and performance, granted the Spec U gives a bit better performance but all of the sound files I could find just didn't sound good to me.

As for tuning, if you want to tap in to your ECU files there s a bunch of things available, the URD Maf Cal works a bit, there are more expensive tuners out there as well that tap into the ECU wiring. URD might have their very nice tuner called UCON available within the next year or two (hopefully) for 2012+ Tacomas. What that means is they have the tuner, but they dont have the wiring harness available for 2012+. 2005-2011 I believe has been made and for sale, but 2012+ is still be R&D'd. Once that comes out you can adjust pretty much everything as the UCON basically gets plugged in to the ECU in between the wiring and the ECU and intercepts all the signals and changes it so the ECU thinks everything is bueno and the UCON controls the truck.

Horrid. 34's kill it, plus that SC whine is so addictive, I average about 12-13MPGs lol. But then again, I didn't buy the truck for MPGS and I certainly didn't supercharge it if I was worried about MPGS lol.

The Supercharger will not effect your MPGs at all. Some have said they saw like 1 MPG loss, some have said they've seen 1-2 MPG gain from it. It's all fluff, the charger isn't going to add or take away anything, your foot is what controls the gas and that's what pertains to MPGs.

If I'm super gas sensitive and I stay out of boost, shift at or under 2.5k rpms and never get in to the throttle at all, I could probably average 15ish or higher, I've seen 20 cruising on the highway before around 70, but with fiberglass fenders the truck is basically a giant parachute now lol

Yeah I mean if you're rocking stock tires, that thing takes off like a bat out of hell. Sc installed on my 2015 at about 300 miles on the odometer, basically the first big mod to the truck. Fun as crap until I threw some new shoes on her.

You are in luck too, if you were looking in to tuning and extra mods, you could easily be over 300hp to the wheels with all the add ons and a URD UCON tuner.

Haha yes! I've definitely given a couple sports cars a run for their money when they try to take off on me and get a couple car lengths and then I start catching up. There's a mustang I catch about every other week on the bridge of my commute that tries that and try as he might he just cant pull away from me. I usually let off the gas and flash my lights to let him know I'm done and he always slows down and gets next to me shaking his head and laughing. Can't wait to regear the truck and get some power back :D

I'm running 275/70/17s and I have no idea what else it has as far as gears or pullys or fuel pump or any of that. I can see the big ol obvious TRD Supercharger sitting on top of the motor.

Ouch! I guess that could be normal with your tire size and if you drive it fast.. Yeah, I don't think I've ever done better than 19 MPG over the course of a tank.. And that's basically 55-65 MPH cruising. Drops down to 15-16ish MPG if I cruise at 80, and generally it's around 17 MPG all the time now that I've gotten my foot off the throttle a little bit. This is with stock tire size and liquid gold gasoline (93ish octane ethanol free Shell)

That's awesome that you found a racing buddy that doesn't get all hot and bothered when he gets beat ;) My races have only ended with me slowing down to avoid avoid a ticket/collision and the other guy blasting by at 100+

How is your tranny doing btw? I noticed you have a 6-speed? My truck just ticked over to 45k and it's on the 2nd transmission - The previous owner did a lot of quick shifting and the synchros were done at 30k.

Anyway, it looks as though I do NOT have the URD pump - I'll get one of those on order today! The only indicator I've had that it's not getting proper fuel pressure is a brief (maybe half second) period of power loss or hesitation when I'm WOT at around 3-4k. We'll see how it does with the new pump :)

Well, I ended up burning through my OEM clutch at about 6k miles, which was a combination of my lack of skill and then come to find out the OEM clutch can't really handle supercharger power. Started hearing from guys that say "they've been driving clutches for 30 years with no problems and after 10-20k with a Supercharger their clutches are toast". I ended up going the full URD route and swapping in a stage 3 racing clutch and lightweight flywheel. It took a bit to get used to, now I only have about 1/2" of clutch play in the pedal where it engages or not and when I want to pop the clutch ..oh it pops now lol.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that flat spot is fuel

I took an easy drive up to Portland this past weekend holding it down to 70mph up i-5 and got 16.7mpg which makes me feel a bit better.

My first clutch (OEM) had the throwout bearing go bad, presumably from the supercharger's added torque. I bought a Competition Stage 2 clutch, but the shop that installed it put it in backwards and it was toast within a week :( I needed a new one stat and so Toyota just put another OEM one in, hopefully it lasts longer than the first one did...but I'm not holding my breath. I don't even really push my truck with the supercharger but I do use 4wd quite a bit on some pretty harsh trails, and I think that's what really hurts the OEM clutch on my truck.
