This is the Issue... They want the truck to run in the 1000 rpm level so you have no response and have to give it a ton of gas.. they should be sitting in the 1500-2500 rpm depending on speed and gear... I have never had a car or truck stay so low forcing you to give it more gas then should be needed. Scary sometimes to have a sudden shift when you need to have a quick response... Traffic is unforgiving.

The truck is great over all just a pain in the ass with the shifting issues.

Anyone else experiencing the truck throwing itself into 3rd gear as you slow down and kicking the RPM up to 2000-2500? If so, any solutions? The dealer reset my computer and reloaded the TSB but it's reverted back to that issue again despite driving it all different types of ways during the learning mode.

They flushed my transmission and refilled it when it was in, so I'm interested to hear if the fluid check helps you at all. Please keep me up to date on your situation. My case manager is trying to tell me that this is how the truck is supposed to act. Thankfully, the service advisor at my dealership has a new Tacoma and told me that mine feels like something is off.

finally back from the dealer. My 17 was there for the whole day. My fluid was accurate and I made sure they let it cool and manually checked it. Also the TSB helped alot but I think the trucks just wants to stay around 1000 rpm which is too low. I love the truck and it has enough power but they need to run around 2000-3000 rpm to give decent power. That being said, I think they have started to solve some of the issues with the 2017. Hope that helped with an update

I called corprate today to create a case # for the residue left over from the TBS performed on my Taco. Guy who took my info was very frank about what's going on it seems. As speculated by many here, he claims the EPA continue to be a huge obstacle for them. Meaning, this current TBS is a result of these "obstacles." So much was talked about that it's difficult to write in detail, but for the most part what it comes down to is, eventually gas motors will be a thing of the past. And Toyota is heading that way ie "fuel cell." He claims, we most likely will see a few more "updates" before its all said and done. This current TSB took care of 90% of my shifting issues, but P to R still lunges on cold start this is why I had a "case #" created. What is clear from this conversation I had with Corprate, it's getting more and more difficult to build gas motors with low emissions and the EPA is forcing vehicle manufactures to get going on alternative ways to move vehicles from point A to point B...

The EPA is a non elected agency given way to much power over everything that we do and could be wiped out with one swift stroke of a pen in the hands of the right person in the right position! Just saying!!!!

True, but they sure have these car (vehicle) manufactures dancing as fast as they can!

I call bullshit on some of this. I just bought a brand-new Mustang with 435 hp and it has none of these issues. Why isn't the EPA coming down on Ford? I'm definitely not happy with the way my Tacoma shifts.

instead of making fuel efficient cars they put a kill switch in some and keep the rpm and shifts low in others... its a bs game

May I ask. How many seconds would you consider a delay from Park to Drive? Are we talking about 1 complete seconds or more like 5 seconds?

I've had a few occurrences that were closer to 5 seconds. Usually 1-2 seconds.

It would "rev hang" sometimes, but what really caught my attention was going up a steep hill near my house, this hill is very steep, crests, and is just as steep on the other side, once I crested the hill and was descending, even braking, the tranny wouldn't downshift and kept revving up with my foot on the brake going downhill! It actually scared me a little and I started searching possible causes. I found this forum, and read others with hesitation, lurching, downshift, etc. tranny problems just like I was experiencing that indicate low fluid. I lurked here and got great advice, started a case with corporate, got the ball rolling. Had a copy of the proper fluid check procedure, but the dealership did it no problem and reported 2 quarts low. I could immediately tell a difference in driving, it was just smoother and not so clunky to change gears. The R to D delay was fixed with the TSB, so I feel better about this tranny now. It isn't perfect, but neither am I. :) As long as it lasts, I'm ok with it. I plan on keeping this truck for at least 20 years.

Anyone out there in So California that has a dealer they used who didn't give them a hard time about manually checking and topping off the trans fluid? Thanks, i am new to forum and drank the cool aid too, mine truck is fine warm, but cold it seems to 'lurch' when going in reverse (foot on brake, just backing up), then from R to D it delays and 'rev hangs' for a few seconds before it 'clunks' into drive. None of this happens when it's warm, so seems like a low fluid issue to me.

Had the update done at 5k service and still shifts the same , same problems as before,to be completely honest i HIGHLY suspect the dealer didn't do it u ask y? They lied to me about two services done to my truck , 1st I got my truck back with 31 psi on tires when they gave me the service sheet they wrote "filled up to 37" 2nd "topped off windshield washer fluid" found out day later that in fact it was empty just the way I brought it in smh
