Here's my chef knife

 

Picked up a couple of new ZTs from DLT Trading recently. A 0452CFM390BLU and a 0801BRZ.

The 0801BRZ is similar to the 0801 but with a bronze anodize plus holes milled in the handle. The 0452 is just anodized blue-which looks pretty cool with the CF scale.

Plus, I see the possibility of opening in your pocket when you sit down-I'm sure it's not the case but it sure seems like it could.

Mechanically, it's pretty cool.

 

Here is the final prototype for what's going to be a staple knife that I will be making as I continue finalizing some other projects. It s a kiridashi made from 1095. 5/32 thick with a 3 inch blade length. The scales are black G10, and it has nickel silver and stainless mechanical fasteners. It has been a several month process in getting things right where I want them and have made a batch of 12 of these blades as I think they are just about right now in terms of the bevel angle and ergonomics.

If you are unfamiliar with these knives, they are Japanese single-beveled utility knife that makes a great everyday carry fixed blade. The blade is very easy to sharpen and it caters well to many cutting tasks. The kydex sheath has the loop holes mounted square so you can rotate the belt loops for a scout carry, or remove them and use a lanyard and make it a neck knife.

And as an aside, I also have been staring at my factory leaf springs sitting in the shop from my Tacoma. I have been considering chopping a bit off, doing some initial tests and then see if the steel will harden to a level that would make a decent knife. Was wanting to see if there is any interest in such a thing. If there is then it would really depend on whether or not the steel is worth the trouble but I think the idea of having a blade made from my beloved truck to keep in my truck would be pretty sweet.

This was the first scandi grind knife I ever bought. Beautiful knife with curly birch handle. Sharpening scratches on bevel. Used very little as the handle didn't suit my unusually large hands.

These all get carried, some more than others. I have a few others that don't get carried and are put up for collecting. Sometimes I get a knife and just can't bring myself to carry it because it's too pretty.

 

Picked up one of the Bark River Custom Hatchets a while ago.



Mostly because I think it's cool. Great little camp hatchet.

 

Nice. Hatchets are really handy. I take a GB Small Forest Axe with me whenever I'm camping or traveling in the truck. Great to have if you need to build a shelter or start a fire.

 

nah doesnt float but its a good knife!

I have one just like the opened one. One thing you have to watch is the screws loosen up after a while. I need to carefully remove them and put locktite on them but havent got around to it. I just tighten as needed, the one screw that holds the blade in place cant be over tightened or the blade wont open. Harbor freight has a bit set that fits the small fasteners.

I bought this for skinning, I paid a little more than I could have got it off ebay but oh well...I ended up quartering the moose my wife shot and it still was somewhat sharp, gave it a little touch up to finish skinning the quarters and it was good to go. I ended up honing it back up to razor sharp after we were done cutting. But Im impressed with it so far.

 

what sharpeners do yall use?
Thinking about picking up a wicked edge system

 

I use a whetstone. Takes practice but worth it.

 

Diamond stone. Spent the first half of my life as a chef, so hand sharpening is second nature.
