Trailer hitch size for Uhaul motorcycle trailer?

I've never towed a trailer before and may be towing a Harley next week. What size/ball drop hitch should I get for a small motorcycle (5x8) trailer from Uhaul? I have a 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport double cab with 5' bed.

It should say on their website which ball to use. I think you can use either 2" or 1 7/8"

 

If you don't tow much you can rent that part from them at the same time. 1-7/8" ball with 2" drop is what I would show up with. I'm just speculating though.

I bought one of these and a locking pin. Worked great for my 1200 mile tow, and now I leave it in all the time, hook down, to help with someone rear ending me

 

Not all U-Haul dealers rent or sell supporting items so it's best to arrive with the draw bar/ball combo. 2" ball and 2-3" drop will work fine. The OP will also need a 7-round to 4-flat adapter for the lighting harness.

If you've never towed before I suggest finding a YouTube video on how to properly hook up a trailer. It's very simple but I wouldn't trust the U-Haul guys.

I worked at U-Haul for a summer when I was 16 and had to show MY BOSS how to properly hook up a dam trailer!! Unbelievable...

Crossing the chains is important because if the trailer becomes disconnected it will cradle the tongue instead of drag it along the highway. If the hooks are missing the rubber things, ask for new ones.

Please please make sure that the trailer tires are properly inflated and do it yourself. Look on the sidewall for the tire pressure. Don't fill them to the maximum. Use a tire pressure guage.

When I worked there they had us whack the tires with a steel pipe to check the pressure. No bullshit. That's how little these people care.

 

Thanks for the info! I will buy a draw bar/ball from Amazon as I'm sure UHaul marks up the prices. I will need to practice backing up with a trailer though! I understand the concept but never tried it

But, still there are many ways to transport your motorcycle (Harley) like you can load your motorcycle into a pickup truck (2015 Tacoma TRD Sport double cab) by unfold a motorcycle ramp and place the rubber end of the tailgate, and ask your friend to push your bike into the pickup truck. You can also secure your motorcycle by getting in contact with your local shipping companies, where you can choose between open and enclosed shipping options. Like, last month my brother also had bought his new bike, Harley which was transported to California from Fresno by getting in contact with We Will Transport It transporters, where the auto transport experts had transported their Harley safely to his desired location.

 

Do not put a Harley in the bed of this truck unless you have a tailgate reinforcement

 

Your answer should be just a call away on both ball size wnd need for a 4-7 wire adapter. Best lesson I learned about backing up was to hold the steering wheel at the bottom. That way you turn the wheel the way you want the trailer to go. Back up slow and take your time as it can get frustrating for beginners.

 

Something cheap and easy I use to line up the hitch and ball. Old broom stick, string/ rope/ strap, something for weight.( I used a bolt and nut that I found unemployed in the garage) Put the string about a foot in front of the receiver,so you don't back up to far,and can check alignment. Soon as you see the string move , get out and check, notice how much more you need to align , then back up that much, stop and apply the parking brake so you don't l ose your position, and then put in park.

 

Any good auto parts place should have the hitch and ball. I did a U-Haul trailer once and it took a 2 1/8 ball, which was a bit odd...
