A 18650 (3.7 volt) is not more powerful than two CR123As (3 volt each, 6 volts total) and as far as rechargeable, there are RCR123As.

That is true, but most of these high quality lamps listed above are optimized to utilize whatever voltage is available. Not brighter with different combinations of batteries.

Glad you posted this because I've been searching for a new light as well that could mount under the lid of the center console. Didn't think about searching for it here. I have a rechargeable led flashlight from Walmart that I paid about $80 bucks for a few years back, no idea now the brand or lumens. So what is the brightest light that can fit under the lid of the center console? Preferably rechargeable and led...

I'm fully aware that any decent light is "regulated". I was replying to a post above that stated a 18650 was more powerful than 2 CR123As.

I use a stream light everyday at work, ive been using it for over 1.5 years and its still going strong. Ive dropped it numerous times and concrete, i wash it of to get any dust or liquids off of it so the waterproof feature is nice. ive put this thing to the test and am very impressed with it.

I don't know where it is at but somewhere there is a thread on flashlights. Might be in off-topic

I agree with @bigmw the MAG light is extreamly bright and reliable, pretty big when you get a D cell but theyre not only USA made but is also a good club if you needed one. just saying, I keep one in my truck.

Skip the maglite, 80's tech. First lights introduced in the late 1970s plus even their latest offerings use led tech 5 years old. Several generations of led tech back. You wouldn't buy a 5 year old laptop, would you?, The fenix or any of these options above gives you 10x the light in a package one 10th the size.

I love the fact they are made here, but they are way behind in technology. I've owned/own a few and for the most part they are built well. People that think a Maglite is the tits have never played with a real torch.

The Nitecore MT40 is still my favorite light.

It's not compact, so that it's only drawback.

It uses two 18650's. Battery life is exceptional. It throws an unbelievable beam. Makes any Maglite look like a dim candle.

Yep, I've got a few still lurking around too. Hard to kill as they say. They are getting phased out of course. I'm a flashlight head and went through the whole upgrading of my 3d/4d to LED, but was at a time in LED tech where the chip was marginally brighter than the filament bulb. I pay so little attn to them that I found one with the batteries leaking, lol. Can't justify tossing them, and definitely can't justify another LED upgrade.. so they sink deeper into my tool bags, etc...

    I've had a number of 502B's.

One major drawback is that they aren't reliable. They have solder issues and tail switch issues. I have a drawer full of "donor" lights for when this happens.

I do have one that I've been using as a weld inspection light for the past 7 years. I even use it to chip flux off welds and it keeps on ticking. This one seems to be the exception.
