Drilling was maybe a 6-7 with the hole saw nearly rubbing on a bundle of wiring and next to a stack of hydraulics tubes. The real pucker was trying to dimple a center point with the ABS controller and its tree of pipes blocking the back swing to hit the punch, that might have been all the way to 11. After that, just make sure to start off with a small pilot hole (I did a 1/8" to start) then bump it up with a stepped bit till it'll take the guide bit for the hole saw, then when you go for the hole saw, it'll be locked into place which frees up a had for holding the wires out of the way.

If I had another shot at it, I would have shifted it over about 3/16ths more toward the driver side. There's a hump in the sheet metal there and the spot where the center should have been is slanted and even my center punch was walking when I tried to dimple it (which doesn't bode well for the drilling to follow), so I settled for putting it at the edge of the flat.

When I drilled, I went as high as possible just in case a stream of water was to get in their. That way the hole would be higher than water level. I don't think it really makes a difference because I have seen several do it on the very bottom with no ill effects .

Vertically, I just tried to center it between the two wire bundles mounted along there. pulling the hole a little more toward the driver would probably have given me a hair more clearance to the ABS controller plumbing and made it a little less likely that something might flex into contact there.

Only real issue I've had so far is an occasional rattle which is probably the aluminum air horn against the edge of the hole. I've gotta get some weather stripping or some kind of rubber or foam in there to pad that out; I've got some old rubber trim protector (made for the edges of the doors to protect against dinging other cars in parking lots) stashed away somewhere that'd do the trick if I can find it, otherwise I'll probably just put a ring of weather strip on the outside of the horn.

Now with a couple weeks of around-town driving, including freeways, I'm feeling like there's some increased throttle response from this, but that might just be my brain tricking the butt dyno into noticing somehting that may or may not be there. It does seem like at least getting rid of the "scooper" at the end of the stock intake should eliminate a pretty significant restriction since that thing had maybe a 2" opening at most, which is 1/4 the area of the 4" ducting leading to the air box.

Here's links to everything on Amazon:

straight hose with clamps: this hose is 12" long, and I ended up cutting off about 3-4 inches, so if there's a 9 inch version, that might work better. I bought this one to simplify the order since it came with a pair of t-bolt clamps (these clamps are a different size nut that the others I used, and don't include ny-lock nuts like the others do if either of those might affect your choice)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KOBACJE

hose elbow, 3" to 4" 90 degree: this is actually the elbow that's been at the bottom of this page for a while and doesn't come with any clamps.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GXJJEAE

3" aluminum coupler to connect the hoses together:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014GXP40W

Here's the inlet horn I used, I ended up needing to put some weather strip around the perimeter of the hole in the truck to prevent metal-on-metal rubbing and a rattle coming from the glove box, there are also some plastic intake horns which would work as well or better out there and might not require any shielding around the hole in the panel. If I had left the aluminum horn rubbing on the steel edge, it did appear from just a week of wear that I would have eventually scraped a hole in the horn without some kind of protection.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012T3QDII

Here's the hose clamps I used, I may have gone overboard here sticking with stainless t-bolt clamps only, and the ny-lock nut on this is probably unnneccesary since I've never seen a clamp that uses one before, but I suppose it can't really hurt anything.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058W7X6E
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058W7XYQ

the "sock" I used ended up needing to be sewn shut at one end, so I'd recommend using a different item if you choose to use one. Here's the storefront for the supplier though, they have many options to choose from:
    http://www.amazon.com/s?marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DE

There are some less expnsive alternatives, and may be some better options out there, for me getting Prime shipping available was a factor in the selection of these parts. the whole kit cost me about $100 including tax and with free shipping, but depending on your membership and state of residence, some of that's subject to vary a bit.

I haven't seen anyone post a 4cyl. I'm sure it's very possible but I'd expect it'll be a few parts that are different

I'd you want to keep debris or of the intake, just put a sock or a prefilter ovet the pipe.
I used a hydrobic cover, but any kind of nylon will work almost as well.
Prefilters are made to keep water out, but that's rarely a problem for anyone.
