Rods were flipped per the instructions. The failure point was the plastic latch shearing.

In late 2014 I purchased a PNL for my Tacoma. I had it installed for a week and decided to sell it on eBay. It was way too flimsy. So.... If I decide to buy another PNL how do I know I am getting the new redesigned model?

Almost every model had some sort of upgrade made to it (material, metal work etc.). Our mounting clip is only needed if you did not have a camera before. However, if you if buy a camera that is meant for the Tacoma, you should receive a mounting clip with it. I would check that first when you buy the camera then you can always pick up the mounting clip if need be.

It was a running change but I would say if you buy it directly from us off the web or from Amazon, you should be getting a new model.

If you are still under your warranty window, we would certainly warranty the product for you. When you say plastic latch shearing, are you talking about the small arm like piece that comes off the back?

But what about #8540 ? Does that fall in the "almost" category ?

I love the concept, but.... Any discounts or incentives bring offered by PNL to try their product again? Or is the old saying appropriate... "Fool me once - shame on you. Fool me twice - shame on me."

I want to say the change took place in July/Aug time frame of 2015. The only thing I can't guarantee with your Amazon unit is if it was sold by a distributor's account or ours. There are several sellers on Amazon.

I would suggest calling our Tech team (800-342-5911 Option 1) to see if they would warranty the product regardless.

How long is the warranty on these? I have one of the manual locking versions installed on my truck for a little over a year and the small plastic arm snapped off.

Standard warranty is 1 year with proof of purchase. If you can provide proof of purchase, call our Tech team and I'm sure they will work with you.

I'm not under the warranty anymore but I appreciate the follow up. And yes, I believe we are talking about the same piece of plastic. It is the small piece that links the handle to the turn-mechanism. I was able to release the tailgate to remove the failed unit by using a screwdriver to release the mechanism.

I too bought a 5400 for my 15 Tacoma approximately August of 15. Was real flimsy and felt like it was going to break. My original handle was a lot more stronger. After all the bad reviews, I took it out and put my factory handle back on so I would not have to deal with trying to get my tailgate open if something broke. If the 5400 is built with more quality, I would try it again.

The tailgate "strikers" are adjustable, my tailgate, w/PNL, opens using "one" finger on the latch. It takes a little patience to get the right "feel" and maybe not a project for the ham fisted.

Have to agree with you. I have a P&L that works fine but you need to be gentle with it.
Tacoma tailgates, their release mechanisms and release handles, even if changed to P&L, are pretty flimsy.
I had an F250 many years ago that I inherited after it was used by laborers on commercial construction sites for 3 years.
The tailgate and handle were the few parts of that truck that weren't worn out.
