I didn't plan on replacing the evaporator I'm just trying to get to the thermal expansion valve or TXV

Seems like I read somewhere that the TXV is accessible from the engine bay. Disconnect the lines and pull out the grommet. Might be worth a shot. :notsure:

WoW! The compressor was still pumping as it was grinding itself to bits. That's about as bad as it gets. Did you flush the evap and everything else that wasn't new? I normally don't recommend flushing but this is one I would.

I flush it an replace the condenser. I'm going to replacing that inline filter at least once. I wish the filter drier wasn't built into the coil.

That is why I said to flush the lines, everything that wasn't replaced. You still have remnants of a badly failed compressor. You are going to have more problems, sooner or later.

Are you having to evacuate and recharge each time you change the filter?

This has been a very informative thread. Thank you @raycox4385 for all of the photos and for sharing your personal experience.

I have a question for all of you who have managed to replace your expansion valve (TXV, for the show-offs :D) through the firewall. My 2008 Taco is currently at the dealer, with the exact same symptoms listed in this thread (cool air on the drivers side and progressively warmer air in the vents toward the passenger's side). The dealer suspects a heater door issue, and wants to pull the whole dash to investigate ($1500+). I've asked for them to first try checking the inline filter for debris, and replacing the expansion valve through the firewall based on the photos you've posted, but they say this cannot be done due to the fact that the 'mode case' housing (diagram attached) and/or the insulation in the firewall will prevent access to the valve.

I call BS, because you guys have done it! So, for those of you that have, can you confirm that neither the mode case housing nor the insulation was obstructing access to the expansion valve through the firewall?

For now, I've told them to remove the refrigerant, and I will give it a go myself. I'd appreciate any info you might have for me.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Isn’t the dryer built into the condenser on these? I might need to replace my compressor soon, it’s been making a grinding/howling sound for a while. The a/c is still ice cold though.

Your symptoms sound like a simple low freon charge. Have the freon pulled, evacuated and recharged. see if that fixes it. Don't have the stealership do it, find a trusted shop.
