I have used that exact same recipe many times and it works great. Add chopped cabbage for the last half hour.

Or, the alternative is to dig a hole in the backyard, get a bunch of hot rocks going at the bottom, get a bunch of banana leaves, and cover a pig in the hole with them. Slow cooker is easier.

pot roast is ok in the slow cooker...it is better in the pressure cooker though.

pulled pork in the crock pot is a sacrilege.

no crock pot pulled pork is as good as actual smoked pulled pork. there's several bbq places that try to pass off crock pot pulled pork as real bbq. just because you put bbq sauce on it does not make it bbq.

Absolutely. But true kalua pork is a big drawn out process... if you want a reasonable facsimile and you're short on time available for prep and finishing, that recipe works great. If you have the time, it would be even better in a smoker. If you have a big hole in your backyard and a dead pig, it would be perfect. There's no comparing dick sizes here, we're just talking in relative terms.

it's cuban but will accomplish cooking a whole pig in the back yard without digging a hole.

While I agree that real smoked pulled pork is better than crock-pot pork, I have to say that we sometimes do it during the week - Put a butt in the slow-cooker in the morning and when we get home in the evening we have pulled pork for dinner on a week night. Week-ends get the smoker going for the real thing.

Smoker pulled pork > crock pot pulled pork
Crock pot pulled pork > no pulled pork at all

dunno. i saw them in publix a few times. i don't know if i know enough people to eat a whole pig. i've had 75-100 people at my house for a party and 30 pounds of pulled pork is more than enough.

Agreed. I do this on a regular basis during the winter with a lump of Boston Butt or picnic shoulder.

Plywood exterior, sunken sheet metal lid for the coals, flashing on the interior to reflect the IR for even cooking. The metal lip doesn't conduct enough heat to burn the wood. It's basically just a cheap outdoor oven, it cooks through radiant heat from the lid. Here's a pic of my homemade one, they work awesome. I've cooked dozens of pigs in them:
