I have PNP also what I did is cut in half the tailgate rubber stop. And you can unlatch it with no force.

If you have to push in on your tailgate to open it (with Pop n lock and OE), you can adjust the "strikers" (?????) to decrease the tailgate pressure on the "rubber" bumper (I can open my tailgate with one finger) You only need enough pressure on the rubber bumper to keep tailgate from rattling. It takes a little finesse to get the adjustment "just" right if you are OCD. I have seen Tacoma tailgates with the tell tale, subtle, dents along the upper edge of the tailgate, from having to "slam" them to fully close them.[/QUOTE]

So I decided to replace my pop and lock (pl5300) with the new version (pl5500) .

I purchased the 5300 back in 2011 and it's been on my truck since. I've always been scared the bar that opens the lever would break after hearing so many stories on here about it happening to people. Recently the lock would stick when trying to unlock the tailgate and it would require more force to turn. Also, when closing the tailgate I would have to slam it to get it to latch otherwise it wouldn't fully latch.

I was actually going to just put my oem handle back on and live with no lock, but figured I'd give this a shot.

    PL5500, PL5300, OEM

So as you can see, the pl5500 has a lot less plastic than the 5300. Many of the components are metal now. The bar that is used to push the level down is shorter and it has a groove in it ( which the 5300 doesn't). I suppose this is to make it stronger ( kind of like how a bone is hollow vs if a bone was entirely solid). It also comes with those 2 clips that hold the tailgate bars now so you don't have to use oem ones ( in case you broke the oem ones)

I do like how the camera is back to its oem position, and the install was so much simpler than the 5300 (which made you install a bracket for the camera and relocate it on the other side of the handle). The handle is smaller as well which should focus the leverage more when lifting the handle.

The material of the 5500 isn't as flimsy as the 5300, I will say that much. Hopefully this new version lasts the life of my truck and can finally put me at ease about not being able to open my tailgate due to it possibly failing.

So if you (the customer) have the newest version and it brakes in a different location. Am I special or is it just a misfortunate event. Its the piece the screwdriver is pointing at.

I think that's the same weak point the old PNL breaks at.

I'm going to be keeping my OEM handle around, just in case.

My PopNLock had a little tab that broke, preventing the tailgate to stay locked.

the reason mine broke was too much tension on the tailgate when i closed it due to crushing the rubber pieces on the side the oem handle was hard to open too. but i have since fixed that problem but i like the way the setup is now so i dont need to buy another pop n lock handle lol

Why not go with the electric lock? You get to keep the oem handle and dont have to bother unlocking it with a key. Ive had mine for years with no issues. If and when it goes bad, Ill buy another.
