Mud flaps does have its use. Same reason why I left mine on. Once I put my sliders with fill plates, I shouldn't have this problem anymore without the mud flaps!

I bought my truck used from a dealer, there were no mud flaps on the front and with 33" tires they would tear them off anyways. I'm thinking of buying bushwacker fender flares since they stuck out a bit further than the stock ones

Fender flares wouldn't matter as the majority of the damage done to your doors/rocker panels are from debris from the ground up. With any AT or Mud tires over dirt/gravel/sand, you will hear the harmony of tiny rocks hitting your truck. Anything real off-road will tear off any type of mud flaps anyway as they will pinch.

My tires rub if I have the wheel turned and hit any sort of bump, such as driveways. So I think that's why the previous owner took them off

From what I've seen and experienced, 285's and mudflaps don't mix unless you have a drop bracket lift.

Yeah I just bought these 285's yesterday and I'm gonna have to some trimming
Edit: I might have to buy some new ones and try to modify them so they attach the outside of the fender flare rather than the wheel well

No use attaching any mudflaps. The way I see it, damage has already been done. I would personally just Line-X the bottom of the doors and rockers to prevent further damage and rust unless you're repainting. I know Line-X comes in colors but not sure if they can alter color to match if you don't like just black. Also congrats on the purchase and welcome to the site.
