I've been using Meguiar's Hyper Dressing for a couple years now. It's a water based dressing that you dilute with water to achieve the shine you want. Right now I mix 12 oz of product with about 20 oz of water in a 32 oz spray bottle. I then spray it into a Carrand Tire Dressing Brush & spread it over the tire. Will not brown your tires since it's water based & it's VERY economical. I can make ten 32 oz bottles of tire shine for about $32. (when you catch a 20% off & free shipping sale on Autogeek.) When I first apply it the shine is incredible but as the days go by it will turn more of a matte finish. Being water based though once you drive in the rain it will need to be re-applied. It's been pretty dry here lately so my tires have been nice & black for three weeks. The pic below is when is when I first applied it.

Benzdriver81 I must apologize. You were referring to the Jet black tire coating system from Turtle Wax. I have used this product on my wife's Lexus RC350's tires with good results. It's the best product I have found. And while using it for over a year now I have had no issues. Looks Great!! And Lasts!! But this is not what I used on my Tacoma's BFG's. This is to be used on Black wall tires only. What I though you were referring to was Turtle Wax Black Tire Coat. This is like I said, a nightmare. Believe you me...If anyone runs across this product RUN !!!! Check out a couple of Reviews from Amaz...

Looks good AMarkham40. Nothing like bright clean shiny rubber with White letters whirling down the road.

Whoa, a product I actually haven't tried yet! And it come's in gallon containers!!!

No harm, no foul, no worries.

I've heard and experienced bad results from most Turtle Wax products in general, so I was surprised when Endura-Shine turned out to be really good.

I mostly stick with Mequiar's. Some are not cheap but they work well for the most part, and are well tested.
You rarely hear anything bad about them.

VRT is super nice. Not silicone based unlike most dressings. Won't get that crusty brown.

Duragloss Tire and Rubber Dressing. I can almost guarantee you'll like it. Also great on rubber hoses, plastics in the engine compartment, and on trim (bed rails, wiper cowl). Zero sling, durable, cheap. I can't say enough good things about it. I used to use Megs hot Shine, but never again.

Why Hot Shine never again? Bad experience or is Duragloss just a superior product?

Yep, simply because Duragloss is that much better. It's a polymer based product, so it's non-oily after it cures. If you've not used a polymer based tire/rubber dressing, it's a completely different animal than all of the other more common "over the counter" type dressings.

An analogy-- you could use Vaseline in your hair to hold it in place. Or you could use hair spray. Both work, but they're totally different products. Haha that's all I can think of to compare the consistency of Duragloss to the other types of dressings.

What is the appeal of tire shine? Why do people want shiny tires? Looks terrible

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me nothing can change or up the appearance of any vehicle Tacoma or other, better than a nice set of wheels and tires. And to have both wheels and tires clean and shiny just adds to the appeal.
    That's just my opinion.
But from all the tire dressing products available and the continued search for the perfect product. I think many people feel the same way.

I to use the Meguiars Hyper Dressing as mentioned above, great product as you can dilute to achieve different levels of shine. Gallon of the stuff lasts forever. I also use it as final touch to engine after cleaning, spray it on and just let it sit

He may live on gravel roads out in the country. Then putting tire shine on would be kind of like pissing in the wind.

Nah I live in the city. What's wrong with just normal black tires? The shiny takes the focus off of the rest of the vehicle,i don't like that

I figured it out !!! No insult intended nor implied.
Must be worried about getting dust and dirt on the ol Choking hazard... LOL
I know I do get dust and dirt off my tires on my pants legs when I'm working around my truck if I'm not careful.
Don't have the other to worry about too much though.
