The AllPro bars I bought are just about perfect. They place the tent right at the roofline and maximize the space available underneath. Quality of them wasn't the best but they get the job done well.

Here's a few questions for some of you guys that have your RTT mounted all the time. I've read a bit about some of these but it can't hurt to ask with a picture of my particular application. So:
    1. Will the weather and sun cause damage to the tent itself? I know the cover of course won't last as long being outside all the time, but that's easy to replace, I mean the actual tent material itself or the zippers etc.
    2. Anyone have theirs mounted similarly notice a difference in their MPG's?

I don't have to keep it mounted but it looks pretty cool I think, and since mounting and removal is done by me alone, I'd rather avoid doing it if I don't have to. Thanks in advance everyone!!IMG_2922.jpg

I have mine mounted like that on top of my shell. I didn't lose any mpg surprisingly.

Two different responses. . . Guess the only way to find out how my truck is going to react to the tent up there is to take it out on a weekend trip!! Thanks guys, lets see how it pans out for me and I'll circle back with some details.

Let me clarify. I lost a couple adding the RTT to the original location of slightly above the cab roof line. When I moved it up on top of my shell I did not lose any additional MPG's.

I have mine mounted the same way, and something to consider is the near certainty that your bedsides will begin to bend outwards: \___/ Total Chaos makes a set of bed stiffeners that are easy to install and quite strong. I recommend them.

They tend to only bend out if you are using those bed bars with a small footprint... mine are still at the same width 62 and 1/4 inch side to side... front middle and back of bed... my bedrack is also made from 2 5 foot pieces of angle iron and .125 dom 1.5 inch tubing...

Mine, and others who mount the RTT on a shell, have bent. There is no doubt that I could see my bedsides straighten out as I tightened the stiffeners. It stands to reason that the strength of quality bed racks will mitigate the tendency of the bedsides to bend, so you might well be good to go.

With a cap and a rack on top. Never had bed bars, so the cap was the only weight on top. Can't say that the cap doesn't have a large footprint. Total chaos stiffeners on the way. Also have corner brackets on the other end to prevent it splitting there.

    Corner brackets for extra support

And because truck pictures. I don't even have an rtt by the way. This is loaded for camping. Also have a second battery and tools in one of the side tool boxes.

Yeah, caps/shells are fiberglass or aluminum so not as rigid, so they can push the bedsides out despite being full length. Steel bedrocks are more rigid, but having individual feet for each leg can lead to uneven movement and pushing or denting of bedsides. Full length feet that tie the hoops together help the rigidity and reduce the chance of he bed getting pushed out.

I have mine on 7-8 months out of the year, no worse for it from what i can tell. the straps that go over the cover are getting a little faded and fraying so they'll probably need to be replaced eventually. wrapping up year 4 with the tent....
having the same tent on both my 1st gen and my Runner I can say that I notice less of a difference now that its on the roof vs over the bed/a few inches above the cab. i think mainly because theres less air flow between the tent and roof. so in your situation - tent over the shell - you'll probably see less of a difference in MPGs vs someone with it at the same height but over the open bed.

I'm looking at a bestop rack from SOS and will want to keep it in on full time, and live in South Texas, so I have the same concerns. Can I ask which Tepui you have? Interested in measurements mainly. I have a tent cot that me, my wife and two miniature schnauzers sleep in. Gets a little cramped in there at 54" x 86" sleeping footprint. Of course you can't sit upright in the tent cot either. I'm trying to decide whether to go 56" wide or 72". I'm leaning 72", but that has it being 12" longer than the bed. Just wondering what that is going to look like. I think 6" over on each end will be fine, but would love to see pics of others with a similar set up first.

\/\/ this exactly... that cap is not strong at all compared to rollcage tubing...

@HomerTaco do you have any pics of your tent on the truck hanging over the back a little bit?

Also @PINS Runner if I were you id just have most if not all of the tent hang over the cab...it willbe better for driving with the tent being so high up aince its going over a best top.
