i started to pull on my pcv valve today and it had no give at all. Are you really suppose to just pull the thing till it pops out?

Yes but they get cooked from being in there since new .

When I did mine I changed the grommet the pcv valve and the hose every thing was hard and brittle.

I don`t remember just what penetrating spray i had close at the time but it helps

Any tips for not letting the geommet fall into the valve cover? Would hate to pull that thing off again....

I used the shop vacuum and got most of it out

I am sure a few pieces might still be in the head or oil pan it has been about50,000 miles.

I had to cut the grommet out with an exact knife on my former 2003 PreRunner. That thing wasn't coming out any other way. I taped a straw to my mini shop vac and vacuumed up anything that fell into the hole.

On mine I cut 1 side with a razor blade, then used a small hook tool to carefully pull the grommet out. Used vacuum like others said to pick up any small crumblings.
