Glad the AFR relocation is working out for you too, mostly. That seems to be right in line with how mine and others' acts. At least it's more driveable, eh? I wish I knew a better way yet, maybe one day.

Its weird how my AEM sensor does so well but the stock sensor acts like shit... I wrapped the pipes to keep the temps up as well to try to help :notsure:

W/e its much better and actually driveable :D

Better quality sensor. Have you tried clocking the maf sensor any? See if there is a position where the turbulence is less.

Also, your air filter. On the inlet, where the filter media meets the rubber base. Is it a curved horn inlet, or is it square edges?

The MAF is in the best position possible with this kit. Probably the straightest run on the entire intake. That said, a straightener in the pipes might be of benefit.

Not sure what you mean by curved horn / square edge. The Turbo had a nice lip on the intel and the airaid filter is mounted directly to the turbo.

On another note. Today was the first day actually driving it in a long time. I mostly used it for short trips just to keep the engine fresh. I was so surprised in how it ran; it feels so good to ask for more power and get it immediately. The 5VZ always had good low end power but flat lined around 2-3k rpms. It always felt like the gas pedal was just the "make more engine noise" pedal. Now it just feels so smooth and responsive, it feels like a completely new engine. And that new TB gasket I put in actually helped a ton; I now make positive boost much sooner than before which took me by surprise as I was merging on the highway tonight :D

If you were to take the filter media off of the base, which bolts to the intake, there would be two style of designs. One would be a flat surface, with a hole in the middle. Creating a 90° edge. The other would be radius'd and look like this.

    sumitani-eg1.jpg

The 90° inlet, to close to the MAF, has been well documented to creating turbulence across it.

Ahh, I think I see what you mean. But I don't think the MAF is causing the idle issues. When it first starts up, its in open loop and idles fine. You can note specifically when it switches to closed as the idle noticeably changes and the AFR's start to swing. Since I moved the O2, AFR's have been doing much better. They still with swinging but they don't go much over 15 or lower than 13 and no more engine surge and fall.

I may get a flow straightener one day but tbh, when I start tuning, I'm going to cap the MAF pretty low and just tune off of the AEM FIC MAP sensor.

    Hey man.....

Gio and I both have 3" straight out too. Just FYI. Hoping your idle/afr gets better. Nice to see it moving again.

@j0shu4, curious what year your and Gio's trucks are. I think some of the early 5VZ's didn't have wide band AFR sensors and probably wouldn't be affected as much with the wider pipes.

I think 95-97 didn't have the wide band. Not sure though.

I'm a 98' brother.......interesting how such little differences between pretty much the exact trucks make such a change. Makes sense though. I'm just glad I'm still boosting reliably, and I don't drive very peacefully all the time.....lol. I'm responsible, but I will open the wastegate up quite a bit. I love the look on people's faces when the turbos whining like a diesel trucks and it's inhaling and exhaling like a jet engine. The faces usually border between shock and disgust. I pulled with a couple youngsters in a modified Evo this weekend and they gave me the thumbs up and said badass truck. Always love that, turbo taco holding coarse with an Evo. Obviously not a 1000hp Evo, but still.

    Gotcha... Maybe different ECU's? Weird.
Yeah, can't wait to get this thing tuned and running smoothly. Wish I had the capital and time to do LT.
