Yeah no idea why Reverse needs to be faster than 1st gear... I'll still take our ratios over an auto :)

I usually just give myself more room so I can let the clutch out fully then use the break lightly to slow things down. As others mention if on gravel can also use 4LO.

Yup. I can actually use 6th on highway towing a 3000lb camper too. Quite happy about that. Of course it needs to be mostly flat for 6th but still decent mileage and quite comfortable to tow none the less

Could also be the physical weight of the fly wheel. Probably built some strength/longevity into our transmissions by giving us a nice hefty rotating mass. Physically cannot spin up or down any differently unless it's lighter.

I had to order my truck in manual and wait 6 months for the order to be taken and completed. They don't even make them down here in Texas to test drive so I just had to order and hope i liked it. It's a good thing I did since I don't even know how to drive an automatic.

Another couple of years and the manual Taco may go the way of the Dodo. :(

As much as I genuinely love my rig and the convenience of the auto....of the 5 trucks I've owned, this is the only slush-box that I've ever had....and only the 2nd auto period in 32 years of driving.

My rig would be perfect with a 6-speed. But alas.

The online build a truck tool only let's you build what is already sitting on a lot in your area. There are many DC OR trucks in a manual out there right now. These are all short brd trucks however, as they have never built a long bed manual.

Because god forbid Toyota need to design 4 different propeller shafts for our truck, as opposed to just the three they have now.

That makes a lot of sense. I called up a dealer 400 miles north and place an order for a DCOR manual. Build date 11/11/16.

The online tool on the Toyota website? I don't think the vehicle has to be in stock locally to be able to build your specific one. I can build a M/T TRD Pro online but there are none around in something like a ~500 mile radius.

What made you choose that dealer specifically? Did you email beforehand asking for an OTD price?

Yes. I'm in S. Cali and the dealer won't budge over here.

Test drove a TRD OR 6MT the other day and wanted to get your opinion on if my experience is normal for the gear throwing (I am coming from a '10 Subaru Impreza 5MT and a '15 VW Golf Sportwagen TDI 6MT so no trucks since my '01 Taco back in 2006. When shifting between some of the gears the throw felt a little more clunky than what I am used to; I never had any issues finding the gears but the motion just wasn't the smoothest. Is this to be expected on the Tacos? I am not expecting it to shift like either of our wagons since it is a truck but want to make sure what I experienced isn't abnormal. Overall I liked the gearing - felt good in the short ride I got to do on it. I also like it way more than the AT which I test drove as well at a different time.

Anything else I should be looking out for? I think I'll be ordering a different one so I'll want to do some checks before I take it home.

I find mine to be clunky and long in the throws but am learning to live with it. I'm coming into this truck from a 350z but I had a manual frontier before and I don't remember it being as bad. Overall I am super happy with my truck and think she is beautiful. I have just accepted that I have passed up my awesome manual sports car for a more suitable vehicle. I also find the steering wheel setup awkward and it causes my left hand to go numb on my 20 drive to work due to the lack and places to rest my arms/elbows.

What model year? Because I test drove a '15 manual and a '16 manual and the difference was astounding. The '15 felt like a truck, long throws, kind of clunky. The '16 felt like my old Volvo wagon. Really crisp and smooth. The dealer told me that part of the 3rd gen redesign was an all-new transmission for the Tacoma. A good friend of mine who's a big Toyota guy says that the '16 manual is a beefed up version of one of their car trannies.
