I read the thread on kayak recommendations from 2015 and found a couple of suggestions but I thought I'd start a newer thread. I'm going to start fishing again( long story) and I'm looking into getting a kayak. Looking for a SOT and will be mostly used for lakes and ponds. I don't want to spend a lot. If I decide it's something I want to pursue further then I'll look into a more expensive one. Would like to stay under $500. I understand there will be trade offs for getting a cheaper boat. Thanks

Sorry, I don't have any real advice other than to check craigslist. Especially now that summer is over, you may find some good deals. Also, not sure, but maybe some companies that rent kayaks sell their old inventory to get ready for next seasons newer models.

Craigslist is where to go we just got my neighbor a nice used one for 250 that is easy to modify, we just started on his he wants it fixed like mine. trolling motor controlled with rudder paddles. You can fix one up the way you want for not that much cash.

If you are looking at new get in touch with a local shop. You can sit in the boat and find one comfortable for you, a lot of shops offer demo days at local pools and lakes that allow you to test them out on the water. Kayaks, as with most things, a little extra cash can go a long way.

I had a 14' Heritage Redfish that I sold on craiglist for about that amount (maybe even a little less) a year or so ago. It was decked out with a dpethfinder/gps and an anchor trolley.

Just a short story to add credence that craiglist is a good place to search for good used fishing kayaks. The end.

I have one of these. It's very stable, moves decent for a wide kayak, and has enough room for everything I need.

The biggest downfall is the seat. I put a cheap foam pad on it and it's good enough to get me by until I'm ready to upgrade

Here's how I have it rigged up now

EDIT: just noticed the OP was from 2016, but leaving this post in case it helps someone else.
