Meh. I own a third gen and think it'd be (fiscally) dumb for the OP to upgrade.

I think it's interesting to see people on here offering feedback to OP that the 3rd gen is not much different than the 2nd gen and that it would be wise to keep the truck. I agree that it would be more financially benificial to keep the truck and not have to go through the process again, potentially loosing more money on the trade. I would say to OP that do what you want and what makes you happy.
I really don't think anyone could make the case that the 2nd gen is in the same talks as the 3rd gen when it comes to almost all areas considered when comparing both trucks. People have used these few bugs the truck has to make it seem like this is a big pile of crap, the truth is toyota hit a home run with these trucks. They are selling like crazy. Times have changed, Toyota has changed its approach with the market demands and has nailed it. I'm not hating on the 2nd gens because I have had one but let's get real here, this is a far superior truck than the 2nd gen. Will Toyota work out the bugs? Yes they will, a few software changes and they have remedied most of the issues.

I think some people want Toyota to keep producing these high displacement 6 cylinders like the 4.0 and continue to use the 5 speed. I'm not gonna sit here and lie, I really like that platform but like mentioned before times have changed and to be competitive the changes are nessesary.

There is no doubt that times have changed and the almighty "mpg" is more of a concern then anything else but in the same breath it's not like the difference warrants trading in a still new truck that he's upside down on for another midsize truck.

And I could not agree more with you, I think if the change would potentially impact his finances more than they are now than I agree that nothing should be done. It's still a wonderful truck (2nd gen) and he will not be disappointed for many years. I was just making a point that people are saying OP should not change the truck because the two are the same or the 3rd gen isn't much different.

Wondering what the OP is going to do??
My take is his truck is new, with low miles.
The whole financial piece is really his side of the street, but since he asked the internetz opinion....
I still hold that he's in deep with the 2015 and it will only get deeper on a 2017.
The suggestion made to sell & pick up something affordable & saving for a truck in the future is great advice.

I drove the 15 for over a year and had no real issues with it. With that said, I've always been use to a more luxurious vehicle as I drove acuras for the last tens years of my life. the 5 speed auto tranny of the 15 in the mountains was indecisive and felt underpowered. some are gonna nit pick at what I say, but when you spend 30-40 grand straight up on a new vehicle (as in no payments because I'm not broke) the 17 trumps that truck in the mountains ten fold. Everything in the interior of the 15 sport was plastic, mostly plastic, and not well designed (again IMO) from materials to design like those dumb ass rubber cup holders that would pop out with every drink. beyond that, and this is to biblite or w/e, if we're comping "fancy things" inside the cab then yes, I'd rather drive the 17 any day of my life with the conveniences that offers, from immediate tire pressure moderating to real time gps and weather and dual temp daa da dada... the list goes on and on... I also went from an access cab to a quad cab which I'm way happier about. brown softex leather isn't bad either. and don't try and tell me seat covers make the 2nd gens more comfortable... I had katzkin installed in my last truck and, sorry, its just not the same. so since I could afford a truck that in my opinion is better than the second gens, I did it, and would recommed it to any one else who could.

    and yes, so-so. you mad?

If you read all my post and not just one, you would have read that I said there are differences between the 2 but not enough to warrant trading in a truck he's upside down on with only 10k miles on it. People have got on just fine without the "fancy" things for years so why go more in the hole for a tire pressure monitor or the other things it comes with?

I'm glad you have money laying around to buy these trucks outright but his is co-signed for and he still owes 30k. Again why go more in debt another misize? His is already a double cab. I understand you wanting to upgrade for a more useable back seat. I bought a double cab before I needed it because I knew I would eventually need the back seat.

I would never be mad that somebody is fortunate enough to buy a new vehicle for themselves. He stated his current situation and asked the forums opinion on the matter. We, including myself have our opinions. Just because you disagree doesn't make it right or wrong. It also doesn't make anybody who disagrees mad.

My Tacoma is paid off and has been for years. I was considering a 3rd gen but I evaluated my family size and needs and will be getting a F150 because it fits my needs better. Do I need to ask you, "you mad"...no. I don't expect you to be so why would I be?

Once again going from one still new great midsize to another very similar midsize and going more I debt to do so in my humble opinion is not the smart thing to do. Have a great day bro. Relax and enjoy your paid off vehicle, I know I would and do

Btw imo again the 15' is a great truck. If mine was a 15 with low miles id be keeping it for years. My 10' is just getting tired and high miles. That's the only reason I will be trading mine in. Enough with the butt hurt already geez

I am no where near the smartest man, but I would say keep the '15 and try again in 5 years and see if you still want it. I love my '16 TRDOR. Havent had any issues out of it minus the transmission software which was just updated. Ive had an '04 Tacoma, then this one. So far, I love the interior changes in the '16, the crawl control isn't bad either lol. I would say wait, you already have a ruper reliable truck, wait for the 3rd gens to drop in price a bit, and for Toyota to get all of the bugs out, then pull the trigger on it if you want.

I agree with your point about OP keeping the truck and not potentially loosing money to trade in and get the 3rd gen. Like I mentioned before, it's very interesting to see people on here ( most that don't own 3rd gens) say to someone else that the 2nd gen and 3rd gen are not very different, also say that the changes are not worth the trade up. This tells me a few things, that you have never driven a 3rd gen to know the changes. That a Tacoma is the only thing you have driven for the last 20 years and can not compare it to other brands and models. People need to understand that the times have changed and people want technology, people want better mpg, people care about how the truck looks. Toyota cannot sit back and let other competitors blow them away because a handful of people don't want change or like having the same truck for 10 years, not saying anything is wrong with that but that time is gone. I'm willing to bet that Toyota will have a new Tacoma in less than 5 years, I'm also willing to bet that the new truck will be a blown 4 cylinder. Yes the 3rd gen has had some problems but so does every other thing on the road within the first 2 years till things are worked out.

For all we know OP just really wants a new truck and may not care about the changes, I know I have purchased things because I just wanted a change. Nothing wrong with it, just gonna lose a few bucks.

I've test driven a third gen, feels like a midsize truck very similar ride to my second gen but smoother because new. Nicer interior for sure. Would I trade a 15 with 10k on it? Absolutely no way would I do that unless I owed little to nothing and my payment would drop or stay the same.

I don't think it is financially worth it to go from a 15 to a 17, but I do think the 17 is a better overall truck. To me the new truck seems really large, but I have been driving a 2006 Isuzu I-280 for four years (same size as a Colorado). The tech stuff is probably the biggest improvement in the new trucks. The interior seems less truck-ish, but it does ride nice and quiet in my opinion. For almost all highway driving with the V-6, and being really easy on the gas I think you can squeeze out around 21-22 mpg regularly.

    Lets sum this up.

Good $$$ decision- Keep the 15 with 10k miles, drive it till it dead.

is the 17 a nicer truck than the 15, probably. If you don't care about your $$$, then why not get the 17, while your at it pre order the 19 as well.

.. and seriously, just get a damn lease on the 17 if you're only doing 10k in two years and can't hold onto a vehicle for more than two years.

    *Hijack*
I'm in a situation. My wife is baby crazy and her clock is ticking so loud I can hear it at night when it's quite.
I bought a new '16 Access Cab OR TRD and put 4k miles on it. I tried getting a baby seat back there and even a booster seat doesn't allow someone to sit in the front passenger seat.
I would like to build a Tacoma up with suspension, racks, skids, etc to roam the country but it would be a shame to sell it right when I'm finishing the build. The double cab version will fit more options of baby seats. I realize an infant seat isn't going to fit but in a year or two the kid will be in a smaller seat and will fit.
So, with the info I gave should I trade in my new truck or trade in my wife? I mean, should I sell my Access Cab and get a double cab now?
I know either way I am out thousands of dollars but I would like to keep a truck and beat it to death for 10 years.
It's crazy. I know but so is life.

What vehicle does she drive? Just take her car whenever the baby is in the vehicle with you. Id try that option first. A guy I work with, meets his wife at work and switches cars with her so the one toting the kids has the car seat in it. Maybe this would work for you.
