I concur with the new motor crowd. I wouldn't trust some smoke and mirror tests from the same dealer that forgot to put oil in. Half a mile of driving without proper lube, that engine has lost some serious life span.

Absolutely! They made a mistake. They owe you an engine without a doubt. Do not let up on
them replacing it. They certainly do not want to but it's their fault.

Didn't wade though the pages. But if no one suggested sending an oil sample to an independent lab for a test, do it.

While looking for sparkles is good enough on your own, it's not good enough in court.

Lab results are. Because they will tell you exactly what the particles consist of and what kind of components in the engine are made from those.

I'm potentially with the new motor crowd. Depending on your lab test results. Which I predict would be problematic. However, if it's clean as a whistle.........

Small claims court and a newspaper consumer reporter could be good friends with you soon.

Get your own sample of the current oil out BEFORE you take it to them on the 1st.

Tell Toyota headquarters to buy the truck and pay someone to drive it for 100,000 miles then do a TV add talking about how - even after running with no oil for ...... and then after 100,000 miles , it still runs as new ! If its never heard about again , we will know !

This is why I said IF. That is only the first and most obvious indication and clearly can't be as precise as an oil analysis.

I once had a lot of large metal shavings in my oil. Enough to be concerned. Turned out that the thrust bearing had somehow falling out and got chewed up by the engine and was in the oil pan. Upon this assembly none of the bearings on any of the journals or bad. But the main cap where the thrust bearing was, well yeah that was definitely ground to a new surface.

Point is the metal shavings warrant clearly indicative of where the damage was. And it just goes back to say that without disassembly and inspection you never really know. Which complements what krosis for saying

Absolutely. Answer for everything. Especially something like this. While he's locked up for assault, no worries about the truck breaking down.

New motor or bust.... plain and simple. The motor you have will NEVER be the same and it will NEVER last as long as a motor that had not been ran without oil.

DO NOT ACCEPT ANY FUCKING THING LESS THAN THIS.

They already drained what was left the first time and tossed the filter, those should have been sent out for a sample. Sticking a borescope in through the drain plug hole is not going to show the crankshaft bearings and sticking down the sparkplug holes is just going to show scratches on the cylinder walls that they are going to tell you is normal. My personal opinion is that they are blowing smoke up you, it is your truck and you can decide if you think its fair.

Well I didn't blame him for not changing his own oil but I did say that if he had done it this wouldn't have happened. Which is true.

With what you quoted, either rod knock or bearings squeaking as the metal surfaces sheared into each other. I bet there is rod end discoloration, from excessive heat.

Sending an oil sample to a lab to check for metal in the oil is the best way to check for damage in the engine.

You have no idea of the extentire of damage done to bearings on the rod and crank.

My bosses dad ran a Cat loader without oil TWICE. Point of failure each time was a spun rod bearing. You can't inspect that with a bore scope or cutting open an oil filter.

Minimum from the dealer would be a lifetime warranty on the motor.

I would get this resolved, then trade in the truck for another truck for peace of mind.
