Yeah that is totally bs. It breaks down where it breaks down , and if it's under warranty when it happens, they should pay to tow it from anywhere.

That's why I have overlapping tow coverage in my insurance, AAA and Toyota care. Old guys always have contingency plans for the contingency plan when the original falls through.

I pulled mine last weekend and it does not have the hash mark. If you have reasonably long arms and are flexible I think you could do this in about 10 minutes. It took me about 20 but I wasn't in a hurry.

My spare came yesterday. Will carry as spare and probably preemptively replace when I get the chance. The new one does have the hash mark.

    Thanks for the help @HalfWayThere!
That is helpful. Did the part you received have a hash or not?

Not a problem, just razzing you. I miss stuff all the time.

I don't think buying a spare CPS is the right choice for everyone. It depends on how you use the truck and your tolerance for failure. I have a very low tolerance for failure driven by both my career and my previous car ownership experiences. But if it's the right choice for you, then great.

You are talking about November 2015, right?
Mine is manufactured in June 2016, and very afraid of them failing...

I travel off road/overland a good amount. I'm not getting stuck out 50+ miles off road bc of this-esp if I can make the fix. Then to have it eventually towed and sit at the dealer while they're waiting for days for the part to come in-nope. Ordered. #hopingforhash lol!
    Thanks again man.

it was in the paper here recently of the worst dealers with customer service
Subaru was worst followed by mercedes
    then honda, lexus and toyota.

VW, audi, hyandi etc all ranked higher. I took it as a grain of salt because I've had nothing but terrible experiecnce with VW

You brought up another point that influenced my decision but I failed to mention: Even if it failed in my driveway, the inconvenience of waiting for the tow and then the dealer doing their troubleshooting "It says the transmission is overheating, you need a new torque converter!" and then waiting for the part before you get to the point I'd already be at if I was carrying a spare. Plus, if they have resolved the issue with the new "hashed" CPS, then a preemptive replacement prevents any inconvenience beyond the initial replacement time.

In game theory the comparison would be (probability of failure * hassle of unexpected failure) vs. (1 x hassle of doing preemptive replacement). I don't think I have enough data to make that call, but I think it would work out in favor of not replacing the sensor because the failure rate is so low. But then there's the psychological factor and the "F-it, I'm doing what I want" factor.

What's your point? There's been numerous reports of failed CPS and I'd assume that at some point Toyota fixed this, but it makes sense that the earlier Gen3s (like ones produced in 2015) would almost all have the faulty CPS.

Do we have any hard data about when Toyota identified this issue and ensured new builds were fitted with a non-faulty CPS?
