Hello, I am new to the group and was wondering if there is any evidence of anyone doing a SAS on a gen 1 with using a Toyota front axle. I've been searching for days trying to find an answer with zero luck. If someone can point me in the rightdirection that would be much appreciated.

It has been done. Those early Toyota trucks are too narrow, so you will have to use big ass wheel spacers. Also, they have the differential on the passenger side. So you will have to flip the axle so that the differential is on the driver's side and you can use your Tacoma drive train. Flipping the axle requires a good amount of fabrication.

I realize a spacer is required to achieve the proper width. I was thinking/hoping there was some sort of adapter to be able to use my W59 with an 80's model transfer case. I've never thought about flipping the axle.. definenatly going to look into that.

I really dunno if there's an adapter that would allow you to mate your tacoma tranny to an early truck transfer case that has a right hand output; thus eliminating the need to flip the axle.

Why a toyota axle? Might as well build a d44 from a waggy. It has the right width and a left hand diff. That way you don't have to mess with changing your drive line to right hand output.

Yup marlin and inchworm make an adapter for that, its one of the adpaters you would need to install a crawl box. Swapping in a rhd tcase is the easiest way to do it. Flipping an axle while not hard, is a PITA. Also try to find an fj60/62 axle. They are wider than a mini truck housing and will match your rear width, they use mini truck outers and have the huge 9.5" third.

There are a few options if you want to keep it toyota under the front end. I like the idea of a hybrid from ruffstuff. Using a toyota center with dana 60 outers and RCV axles but that is really spendy vs a Waggy 44. Though if I am doing a SAS I'm not putting a 44 under my rig. Its getting a 60 or a fabbed housing. I've seen too many broken 44s with 37s to put the work in. for a Dana 60 the dodge in the Narrowest and is perfect with a 14 bolt or 60 from a HD work van.

I always thought the idea of a hybrid with a toyota 8" center and d60 outers was senseless. Why have 1ton outers with that tiny 8" diff? No way. Allpro sold an axle like that for a while and I don't think it ever got much popularity.

The only way to do hybrid right is 609; which is D60 outers with a ford 9" center. But that's a lot of dough.

I really don't understand people's obsession with staying with all toyota axles. If you can build them for nothing, then I totally get.

But if you have to start adding money like crazy to upgrade this and that, then it's not worth it IMHO.

I did it. No spacers where needed. But added 1.25 to the front to keep the tires out of the springs and a little better stance.

400 is a good deal for a complete front axle. About what I paid for my first one and second one I paid like 250 for. But have to acount in the cost of ifs hubs and everything else to widen it.

HAha kind of. I swapped the SA hubs for ifs hubs which made it match the rear and let me use tacoma brakes (look up fror tacoma brake mount). because I moved the spring perches wider, the tires may have got into the springs. never really checked and just put them on to be sure and for a little better stance. toy (black sas with a Flipped housing) did the same thing and where I got all my info

That's right. I forgot that guys have been using the IFS hubs to widen the front end.

Is the 1sr gen tacoma around 60"-61" at the axles? Can't remember at all

Have you considered using the FJ80 front housing?

I chose a 62" WMS for my front Diamond. OEM was 60" for my '03.
    No wheels spacers.

EDIT: After looking through this build, I input the incorrect width I am running. Corrected above.
