Does anyone have any idea if there is more than one size radiator on first gens?

There are at least 3 "sizes" as defined by the height of the core. You got manual trans, auto trans with cooler and some how 5 lug 2wd gets in to the picture. There are different shroud heights also.
Many aftermarket units are now coming with auto trans cooler, needed or not, regardless of the size.

Well can I fit one that is shorter on a 3.4 automatic and not have any problems?

Yes, no problems per se. With the auto, obviously you will need a cooler, be it in the radiator or a stand alone. There could be mounting bracket holes slightly off and the existing shroud may not fit. Nothing a little plastic cutting wont cure. IIRC one fellow just left the "clip on" strip at the bottom of the fan opening off, and all was well.
It is not uncommon for folks to go with the shorter ones for better approach angle with a custom front skid. With an OE 4wd man trans radiator a custom skid plate can immediately slope back instead of dropping straight down a few inches first.

I've never seen any builds on this. Anybody have any links to products and builds with a write up?

There are a few as I remember, can't quite put a finger on em. Search for stuff about aftermarket trans coolers and maybe radiator replacement topics.
All I have is the plan for the pictured skid.

I found one from low range off-road. It's for a 3.4 SAS swap for clearance. I'm not sure if it has a transmission cooler, it doesn't say. I'm going to call Monday to find out.
