Hello, I'm new to this forum. Hopefully I can get some help. So about two weeks ago I installed a cold air intake in my 08. It was way jumpy between gears and the "Check engine light" turned on. I thought it was the mass air flow sensor connection because one of the wires was worn out so I replaced it and cleaned the mass air flow sensor. It got a bit better and the light turned off but still jumpy. I had my dad take my taco to a mechanic he know he says it's the transmission. When he brought it back I checked the oil and it's still pink. I'm no expert on automobiles. I'm learning as I go but can you still have problems with good transmission oil. I bought this Taco 2 years ago from a toyota dealership and I never had any problems with it until I installed this cold air intake. Should I put the stock intake back in? Is anyone else having similar problems? Is it a more serious and expensive job? Please help me out.

If you haven't had any transmissions issues before, and the CEL and lurching issues happened right after installing a CAI, I think it's safe to say it's something to do with the CAI. That mechanic sounds sketchy to me. I'd get a 2nd opinion for sure, but first I'd try putting the stock air intake back on and seeing if that alleviates the problem.

Also, if you have a bad MAF then cleaning it won't do much good, sometimes they just need to be replaced.

Have you pulled the code from the check engine light? Hopefully the mechanic did, did he mention what it was?

The mechanic did not take any codes. He resetted somethings, by what I was told, and be teat drived it. He just said it's the transmission.

Ehhh, definitely take it to another mechanic. Reading the codes is the very first thing any mechanic should and would do. Especially if the code popped up after you put the CAI on, it's gotta have something to do with that. I'm guessing maybe a P0171/2 code.

First thing to do is hook up a OBDII scanner and pull the trouble codes. Sounds like you have a misfire. I'm thinking the intake filter had too much oil on it and gunked up your MAF sensor.

Thank you so much you guys. I'm hoping it's not the transmission but I doubt that it is.

I highly doubt it's the transmission either.

If you take your truck over to Pep Boys or O'Reilley's they'll read the code for you for free with their scanner. Out here in CA, AutoZone apparently just stopped offering that as a free service but they might still in other areas. Or you could just rent one from them on a deposit and get it back when you return the scanner.

I'll try that for sure. It's easy to get a scanner. Thanks again.

Easy enough problem to trouble shoot, just reinstall the stock intake. If the problem goes away, it's the intake. If it doesn't go away, it's something else. Problem solving 101..

'System too lean bank 1 or 2'

Its common with a bad MAF sensor or vacuum/exhaust leak
