but installing new resisters wont keep them from coming unsoldered from the heat would it? I think one might need a more heat resistant solder or some such. eh?

So I really didn't want to dig through 94-pages of this thread, but I did dig around a bit before posting. My issue is a bit different.

A few years ago, I repaired the solder joint and all has worked fine, until one day the unit just failed to display - again. I can cycle the button to change from F to C repeatedly, and the direction / temp will display temporarily ... until it then fades back to being off again. Is anyone else having this specific problem?

    Thanks in advance?

It could be a different issue, but just as likely the same one. It seems to be very common to have repeat occurrences until the resistors are actually replaced with ones that don't get as hot. The micro-size packaging of the original resistors don't have very much volume or surface area to allow dissipation of the heat.

The heat is generated internally to the resistors with current flowing through. The ones recommended for replacement are stouter, for better heat handling plus they have wire leads which raises the resistor at least a few millimeters above where the solder joints are. So less heat gets to solder joint area.

Oh sure, I was having trouble understanding how just the heat from the sun was doing the damage... make all the sense in the world now, thanks... ;)

Also using a better solder seems to help. The consensus is the lead-free solder is garbage.

Yep, one shortcoming with the "PC" lead free solder, from what I've read, is a tendency to chemically develop very tiny "whiskers" over time. This is a real problem in today's circuits with thousands of micro sized components crammed onto a single board. Only takes one of these to reach over and touch the next component then you have a short. Think of how much electronic wizardry is packed inside your phone.

My temp gauge was not working as well so I figured what the heck. Followed this step by step went out and bought a small soldering tool and with zero soldering experience I dabbed on a bit of solder and put it back together. Voila!!!! Thanks for the info!

Thank you. I did this & it went perfectly. I did have to tin both ends of the resistor as the floating the solder would not take. BTW my resistor fell completely out. Lucky I recovered it.
Now to find the vibration in the front end. Seems to be after the 2" lift & goes away when I put it in 4h. Some one mentioned a diff bearing.

I re-floated the two 510's and still nothing. I must be missing something.

It's possible the resistors themselves are bad

Fixed my problem. If you see three dashes instead of temp and compass works good check wiring to temp sensor. In my case one wire was almost torn off. After soldering it back all I can see outside temp.

so is this compass / temp display worth having? I have a 2nd gen and it came with no display. So i was searching and found the gentrex mirror with dimming, compass and temp. Was wondering if that would be a way to go instead of the display. thoughts / opinions?

My 2009 Tacoma does not have the sunglass holder. How do I remove the overhead console?
