Has anyone installed an engine coolant system filter on the 4.0?
I was considering the Donaldson, but can't figure out how to fit in under the hood.

    Any thoughts?

What would be the purpose of a coolant filter? For towing?

Instead of filter you could just change the fluid more often, right?

Seems like a filter on a coolant system is risky. As filter clogs it will have less flow which isn't good for motor, correct?

The filter is side stream so if it did completely clog it would not affect the system at all.

And yes, its for towing...trying to protect all that aluminum

I think there are better things to spend your money on.

For less money, replace the fluid and radiator in 8 years.

I would say its not necessary. Flush the coolant at its regular interval and be done with it.

I would agree. Adding components is only introducing more leak points. The cooling system is filled with long life fluid. It sounds like you are wanting to fix something that isn't broken.

It is only natural to try to care for a very expensive purchase. Routine, cheap maintenance is the best answer. This site is full of stories of Tacoma trucks going 400,000 miles with regular maintenance.

x2: On my '95 I did a drain and refill about every 60-90k, think I used the auto parts store radiator flush stuff most of the time and recall once having it professionally flushed. At about 10 yrs/ 200k I preemptively changed all the hoses and thermostat. Ran that truck 15 years/379 k miles, Never a cooling system failure or needed replacement of the radiator/heater core.

Donaldson Coolant Filters - appear to be for Big Rigs - Large Diesel. See the video. Not real sure this applies to smaller automotive gas operation. Change coolant more often if you are concerned.
