I suppose the manual could be different from the auto and that would make sense.

Don't think that's the case. Battery only powers the Door locks and alarm. The ignition is controlled by an RF Chip imbedded in the FOB or Key. It doesn't require battery power as it responds to the ignition system by RF.

Well yesterday and today finished driving 775 miles. I'm very pleased running 75-80 mph and got 24 mpg. Cruise was on most of the time except going through Nashville, Knoxville and a few other large city's.
    performed great, post TSB.

Yeah Murrayb4 told me that. Good to know when the batteries go bad I can just use my key and not worry about push buttons to open or lock my door. I bet a guy could buy a key with the chip in it and get rid of this push button fob once he got it cut for his ignition.

Exactly, The chip is a "Passive" RFID Chip which receives power from the ignition system to respond with it's chip ID.

Key has to be initialized with the specific vehicle so it recognizes the new key and chip. Each chip has a unique ID which the vehicle system needs to recognize as the right number.

A decent locksmith can probably do so, although one question may be whether such a key blank exists or not. Maybe so, maybe no.

I still think you're worrying about a minor problem. My wife's four year old RAV4 daily driver has the integrated key/remote like you have and hasn't yet had to change a battery. I had that style key on a JKU and drove it four years without ever having a remote battery need replacement. At that rate you might change a $2 battery once or twice in ten years of ownership.

smashed this, broke that, covered it up with tape and paint
See, the other problem i worry about with that keyfob is smashing it somehow and being stuck

I go camping/climbing alot, and god forbid i had a fall off a rock face or i trip on a trail and smash my key and break that chip, im now stranded in the middle of nowhere, where on the otherhand, if i break the key..... ive probably broken another thing or two also

I do have the Toytec Boss 2.0 suspension and an add-a-leaf. I don't know how much payload is increased with them, if at all, but I can say that it handled the load very well :muscleflexing:. I'ts very hilly where I live and it took the ups and downs well. In total about a 4 mile drive with no issues.

Two thoughts -- first is if you're clipping the fob to your backpack/daypack key strap like most folks do and still manage to hit so hard the shell so disintigrates that the circuit board is damaged... you're being airlifted out of there and your truck isn't a concern.

You can also remove the physical key from the fob, turn the fob off and stow it inside the truck or a hitch lockbox, then lock the truck with the key and head on out.
