This thread is not intended to strip the merits of 4x4 in any way. Merely to highlight the merits of the new, third gen, 4x2. 4x4 is tested, tried and true. I have one and love it.

    Agree...
Some people shouldn't own a Tacoma or any vehicle for that matter. Heads stuck too far up their own asses to realize what's going on outside of their tiny "BRO" brains... and endangering themselves or others.

To be honest, most 4X2 with a locker will go on most offroad excursions. If they have clearance they can crawl pretty well too. Problems a 4X2 runs into is if the trail is muddy or snow and both rear tires slip or the rear wheels start to crab.. Those are the real weaknesses I've seen with a 4X2 at it's limitations. But if you can keep the rear wheels behind the front and at least one with traction, it will go anywhere.

There ya go. So far, I've hit mud, and slowly (or very very quickly) made my way through it. But probably not anything serious. But I didn't buy this truck to crawl through deep muddy "trails". Christ, this thing is too expensive to do that regularly ;) Haven't hit snow yet. But I know how to drive in snow with 2wd and much, much less clearance. I'm not expecting any problems, but can't report beta on that yet (anyone here have it?). To be honest, if I were heading straight for an ice rink I'd just take the wife's AWD XC70.

What does this have to do with offroading a 4x2 vs 4x4. This isn't a financial discussion thread. You bought your truck outright, good for you. Want a cookie?

you'll be fine, just keep some weight in the back in the winter and you'll get around easily.

I have nothing against a 2WD truck and I understand that not everyone needs 4WD.......buuuuuut.........EFF Toyota for putting an "offroad" sticker on a 2WD truck. That is absolutely retarded....IMO of course

I'm a man! I got a 4x4 ! Ha Ha, It is so funny that people make fun of 4x2s. I have been Blessed
to have owned 2 4x4s and I never needed them. Some guys like deer hunting, some like trail
Riding and that's awesome! They like 4x4s and that's fine, to each their own. Whether you like it
or not the lockers in the rear end does work very well. Your findings on the 3gen is spot on. They
have a little more pep than the 4x4 because it's a lighter truck as you know. Let's all be happy we
drive the best trucks on the road in my opinion!

4x2's unite!!! Haha, this site makes me regret not buying a 4x4 constantly, then I remember Ive never gotten stuck while using it, its a 2.7 anyway so prob don't need the extra weight further sapping my power and I use my truck to get to work and haul stuff for the house and then I feel better... Next truck will be 4x4 for sure though...

Not sure why I'm replying to this but I kind of agree. When I look at that truck with that decal I feel like I'm a high school kid driving a truck my rich dad bought for me. Contemplating taking it off... regardless of if it said TRD OFF ROAD 4x4 or not. But, like I said, I've been off road multiple times in it and it's all about clearance and locker and tires, so... do you engage 4x4 every time you go off a road? If so, you're a turnip. ;)

    How is the market deceived?

The average 4x4 owner doesn't even use it, let alone purposefully buy a 4x2 TRD Offroad for the sake of having a locker.

    They want the bedside decals.

You might consider toning down your "retard" rebuttals, also.

All three of my Tacomas have been 4x2 but none of them have been the same. 05' SR5 (open diff and not useful), 05' TRD Sport (Limited LSD was actually not bad at all), and my 16' Off road (with locker). Id say the locker is the best one ive had yet and its weird to say that I have compared pretty much all 4x2 models and they have actually taken me pretty far if you are willing to push a bit harder. I once did a 4X trail and I took the risk of getting stuck but I was with like 8 other 4X TW trucks to pull me out and I never needed it. Granted I took by passes for some parts. In my opinion I dont really need the 4x because I dont really do anything I would need it with and second I would probably go crazy with it and roll the fucking thing.

The market is deceived because nearly every person that looks at a truck with "TRD OFFROAD" sticker will assume it's 4WD.

I'm sure that unknowing people will even purchase a truck with said sticker assuming they're buying a 4WD unit.

Retard rebuttal acceptance noted and disregarded... we are men talking about trucks
