I've heard Canon has a broader range of lenses, something to keep in mind.

Yeah, the Nikon editing software that comes with the camera is able to convert RAW to JPEG. So after editing the RAW file I just save it as a JPEG.

I say a t4i or t5i. Not much diff between the two. For a lens, canon has a inexspesive lens that is great. 50mm 1.8. For a zoom lens a 28-135 can be found used pretty easy for a good price.

I picked up a Canon T5I this summer and its been great. It still does lots of stuff I have no clue about but takes good pictures.

As for lenses I have three and they fill the gap quite nicely. Personally I looked for canon lenses (nikon offers the same just called different) with IS (image stabilization) and STM. (stepped motor). IS is nice when shooting handheld. STM makes the lens quieter so it wont be picked up if shooting video (when adjusting zoom)

    But i went with

10-18mm - Good if close up to whatever shooting. Close being like within 10-20 feet or so. Thought I would use this one more off-roading but actually dont use it that often

18-55mm - Pretty much the lens i use the most. Good for taking pictures of of people driving. Stand far away and zoom in then adjust the zoom less as they drive closer. Still lets you get close up and see quite a bit.

55-250mm - My zoom lens. Dont use it much off-roading but its nice to have for scenery and stuff.

I picked up the 10-18 and 55-250 as refurbished lenses from canon. They go on sale through canon every so often and still come with a 1 year warranty. Both mine looked brand new.

Canon has also been running rebates so be sure to check those out as I ended up getting mine for cheaper than people were wanting used.

Ok. I'll look into that. I think I'm finally figuring out lenses lol.
Gotcha. I'm gonna check out the specs on the T5i right now! I just read an article on lenses. Things are making since now lol.

I think I would like a prime lense. Probably a 50 mm F/1.8 (still don't know what the difference between g or d is... But at least I know what the numbers mean! And then I think a zoom lens that goes a little more than the factory one would be nice. Like a 28-135 mm mentioned above!

    I have a 50 1.8.

It's a great portrait lens for the money, my only complaint is slow AF and a super shallow depth of field that either makes a picture or breaks it.

Judging by the question's you're asking, a d3200, 3300, or 3400 is the perfect camera for you. When you're ready to shoot manual (all I recommend) the example images it shows for every setting you change is freaking AWESOME for a beginner.

When you realize the limits of your $300-$400 camera you can easily sell it on craigslist for a small loss and upgrade.

I think I take some pretty decent photos and my little d3200 has only ever been the limiting factor when doing long exposure shots.

The first three pictures were taken with a 55-200mm f4.0-5.6 and the second two were with a 35mm f1.8

This is with the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens...

tl;dr : A 3000 series DSLR is the perfect learning camera and will do anything you ask of it for quite some time. When/if you outgrow it you can sell it or keep it as a solid back up.

Here's where my 3200 is "failing" me. Wayyyyy to much noise up in the sky regardless of which settings I use.

I know Nikon 50mm 1.8 has a d or g designation. One being a older version. Not sure which is which

A prime lens is cool (I think) since it requires you to not be a lazy fuck and move around to get closer/further away from your subject to get the frame you want. I have been using my 18-55mm kit lens more and more as of late. I really like how much of a landscape it captures compared to my 35mm or 55-200mm.

50mm you'll be standing pretty far back to capture your whole truck. That's 80% of the reason I got a 35mm.

I gotcha. So maybe I'll just have fun with the kit lens and also buy a 35 mm prime lens with a better aperture. Sound like it will take a while to outgrow it.
Slow af? How is it slow?
All those look great! And think youre right, I would really like a 3000 series Nikon. Sounds like even without a prime lens I could be plenty occupied and happy with the kit lens for a while.
So I don't understand what's wrong with the last two pics? They look great! Are you manually adjusting how long your shutter stays open based on the darkness level?

you'll need to learn white balance and iso. Aperture and shutter speed you can kind of fudge until you get it where you want it

There's a douche canoe on Youtube named FroKnowsPhoto. He put out a video call something like Above and Beyond Auto that you can download for free (see also: illegally) on a number of torrent sites. It's an absolutely awesome video and took me from scared of manual to shooting exclusively in it. Does an excellent job of comparing settings, explaining the "exposure triangle" and even a bit on composition.

I would ALMOST say it's worth the $67 or $77 he charges for it, but I did not pay for it.

He's also not NEARLY as douchey in this video as he is on youtube. It's hard to watch him on youtube, I think.

Here's an episode he did while out with Adventure Driven... Kinda entertaining.
