    Whole lotta stuff
Here is Cali it doesn't really get that cold however, in high-desert environments it can get down to mid 30s. In my personal backpacking experience, there is no all-in-one temperature sleeping bag; I've frozen in a 15 degree bag at a 40 degree night at low body temperature, and I've burned up in 40 degree bag on a 25 degree windchill night. A very high determinant is whether you have food in the furnace and how high your body temperature is when you enter the bag.

Low-temp bags can be a real pain if you have eaten or sweat before you enter your bag and your night temperatures only reach plus-minus 40 degrees. However, I've found I can still use a high-temp bag (such as a 40 or 50 degree) on colder nights when I use additional insulation such as a fleece. I currently run a Suisse Sport trekker bag rated at 40 degrees (which is good for me because it only weighs 2 lbs) that I got on sale at big 5 for $30 along with a fleece blanket bag inside it. This setup has kept me warm, sometimes too warm, in every environment I've been in thus far. What I like is that I am able to use one bag to keep me warm in colder weather and simply discard the fleece and use it as a pillow on warmer nights. I am covered for a wide range of environments and my total payload for the bag totals at 3.5 lbs, 4.5 lbs if you include my sleeping pad.

Great post. Time of food consumption is something many don't think about. I'm gonna look into that bag you're using right now. Where did you get that fleece blanket bag you're talking about?

I was able to pick up TWO wenzel Grande 0° bags for $120 and they are awesome. They are super bulky though. I keep one in the rtt and one in the bed. I've been in 0° in a ground tent at the time and stayed warm.

I've experienced temps in the mid teens in Death Valley, so I have both 0* and 30* down bags, plus a down blanket. I hate wearing clothes when I sleep, and I rarely need to.

Unless the gortex comes off in the middle of the night and you wake up to both inside bags holding a swimming pool.

I have a very large 40* bag. With my girlfriend and I in it in the RTT, we've never gotten cold. We have camped in 30 degree weather and been perfectly fine. 2 people in a small RTT keeps it pretty warm inside though. They are pretty insulated.

It was one of those nights. I was so tired that I just went back to sleep in it too.

Hog wash on the too top heavy thing. I have yet to hear or see pictures anyone doing "technical" wheeling tip over because of the RTT. I hear that reason for not getting a RTT all the time but never see anyone post a casualty due to one.
