I want to replace the vapor canister in my '04 2.4L Tacoma 260k miles. I can get the Dorman for $184 at Rockauto or genuine Toyota from Camelback for $276. Anyone have any experience with the Dorman? Thanks.

    Reserected from the dead.
I do know their lug nuts suck. The chrome lug nuts were rusting after 1 year.

I have bought suspension parts, brakes and shocks that I think are just fine.

I would probably be fine with a charcoal canister from them.

Subbed. My 04 V6 has charcoal canister problems out the wazoo. Might just get a non-OEM unit next time around

I used the Camelbacks OEM canister when I did my 04 3.4l and I researched the hell out of finding the best price I looked at the Dorman one but decided if I was to go thru all the trouble of removing the bed and work involved I better get the OEM based on the fact that I would have to remove the Dorman if something goes wrong with it and then ending up with an OEM one anyways, my cost $250 from Camelback. I paid for OEM reputation, as opposed to Dormans Rep ??? It worked out with the OEM and learned to stop topping off my gas tank at the Gas Station after that ordeal.

Just to update: I put the Dorman cannister in on 6-4-16. Perfect fit. No evap system error codes since.

Yes...everything you would find on the OEM cannister was on the Dorman...sans any Toyota branding of course. There are some good photos of it on Dorman's webset: http://www.dormanproducts.com/itemdetail.aspx?ProductID=77833&SEName=911-635 . Made in China, lots of plastic. We'll see how it holds up.

    Pretty much stock right now
I went OEM. Lots of plastic there too, except for mounting brackets.

Did you remove the bed? Don't have to.

I did not remove the bed. Tight squeeze but doable.

Good to know it worked out. I've been smelling fuel around my 04. Figure it's just a matter of time before I need to replace mine.

better look around your gas tank on the top around the bolted flange where the fuel pump is mounted, the gasket goes and rust gets around the edge on the gas tank and will start weeping out after you fill the gas tank full. you can get a flash light and look in there between the gap between the back of the cab and front of the bed. I could bet its leaking there, mine did that I could smell gas when getting out of the truck

Just went thru all of this. If you're smelling fuel there's a good chance your fuel tank is rusted at top where straps hold it to frame. Mine's an 02' 168,000 and chased it for a while. If you live in a dry climate many Toyotas get a fuel smell from a hairline crack at fuel "rollover protection" valve on top of tank that only a smoke test will reveal unless you remove bed. This valve is cheap to replace but hard to get to as straps will be toast. This valve often triggers the dreaded P0440 emission code which is fairly difficult to fix on first attempt. For the record the charcoal canisters on our trucks are fairly robust and if you STOP FUELING when pump clicks ONCE you should be good for expected 500,000 miles ( what other vehicle owner can say that!).

Not sure exactly what's causing the odor but my check engine light finally popped on today.
I'm going to get it scanned and go from there.
I replaced my tank strap last year after one broke, so a rusty tank wouldn't be out of the question.

Over Halloween I had my 02 v-6 in a local shop because of P0440 and some other work I needed done. Had a new canister installed along with new OEM gas cap and replaced both valve cover gaskets. 280K on it. The truck ran for about 100 miles and the evap code came back on. Took it back to the shop, and he read it and said its the 0440 again. Then last night I had to get gas, filled the tank up and drove 2 miles home. When
I got home I smelled gas and as I was getting my things out of the back of the truck I noticed a wet spot between the bed and the cab. My driveway is on a slight slant, and I always pull into the driveway because we have a tree that leaks sap, and I'd rather it get in the bed than on the cab. I got down and smelled it, and it was gas. My question is what Mush Mouse was referring to-----

better look around your gas tank on the top around the bolted flange where the fuel pump is mounted, the gasket goes and rust gets around the edge on the gas tank and will start weeping out after you fill the gas tank full. you can get a flash light and look in there between the gap between the back of the cab and front of the bed. I could bet its leaking there, mine did that I could smell gas when getting out of the truck-------

Would I have to remove the bed in order to access this area and look closer at the top of the gas tank?? Would a leak here cause the large evap leak code to show up? Or is this just the next thing I'm noticing in a long line of items to track down evap code issue? Any help would be appreciated.
