I have had my taco for about 2yrs now. I just recently started actually putting this outlet to good use. I do construction now and use it to charge my power tool batteries while driving to another location. I have used this to run electric saws on my tailgate. Recently it became very handy while in the middle of a field with now other source of power. My dump trailer battery ran out fully loaded and half in the air. Electric battery charger ran off truck bed and came through just as I needed it too. The above comment about multiplying voltage and amps to get wattage is accurate. You may be under 400w to charge/run an item but when you power it on it will trip if that wattage is not below 300w. Converting to 1000w all time is a great idea if anyone has any advice on how to go about that and what the consequences could be on truck and/or truck battery in that case.

I ran across a neighbor who was running a Harbor Freight 1/3 HP compressor with his truck. Name plate amps are 2.6 and max pressure is 100 psi. He has "twinned" a second 5 gallon tank to it so that his supply is a bit more than just the "hot dog" tank that came with it. Seems to work fine at the 100 psi regulator setting but probably needs a bit more tank to use as an "air-up" supply.

You can't really use it for anything that makes heat at all. I use it to run a standard box fan in the summer when I go camping or if it's a buggy night. Also works with a drop light.

Anyone ever tried an air mattress? Going camping this weekend and this would be really useful!

I don't think its useless. I think there are plenty of people who use battery powered tools as part of their profession and the outlet is great for running a battery charger while driving to job sites. Me, I use it to keep my deep cycles charged while driving between shows. Its great.

I realize this is way too late but for anyone else wondering, I suppose it depends on how much power the pump draws but I've also done it successfully

Wanting to power my drone's battery using the bed outlet. I've powered a few things with it but anyone know offhand if it should charge fine without messing up the battery. Battery says Max 100w. Here's the other specs

    Capacity 5350 mAh
    Voltage 15.2 V
    Battery Type LiPo 4S
    Energy 81.3 Wh
    Net Weight 462 g
    Operating Temperature Range 14° to 104°F (-10° to 40°C)
    Max Charging Power 100 W

I've used my electric skillet and blender on mine many times on camping trips. Works great.

Would it make more sense to invest in a decent set of 18v battery powered tools (I'm a milwaukee guy myself, but thats a discussion for another forum) and just run a bank of chargers off the outlet? they only draw 90w/ea. Its obviously not intended for prolonged heavy duty use anyway. The 18v batteries would basically allow you to do some fancy accounting with your power, since you're charging your battery bank while you're measuring/marking, etc. Thats how I intend to set up my mobile toolkit, at least.

I have had my 2017 Taco since July and have used the outlet several times... primarily to run my Fender Mustang amplifier to my acoustic and electric guitars to entertain the imagined masses with my power chording. :rockband:

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
A long time ago, someone in this thread mentioned not being able to use the rear outlet for anything heating-related.

On the contrary - grab yourself one or two cheap heating pads from Walgreens/CVS/whatever. I usually sleep in the bed of the truck, and getting into an ice-cold sleeping bag sucks. So warm it up with heating pads before you sack out.

What I don't like is having to need the key in the "on" position to get power back there. Is there a hack for this that someone already figured out?

When both indicators are lit, you have 400 watts available. When you put it in drive or reverse, the 400 indicator goes out and you only have 100 watts available. Apparently they don't want you to be able to operate power tools while driving.

one horsepower is 746 watts. 1/3 horsepower is 249 watts, well below the limit of the inverter, as verified by the nameplate amps
