If it makes you feel any better, I knew a guy (auto tech instructor back in HS) who drove his Toyota pickup with the 22re 2 miles from the house then 2 miles back without oil. He changed the oil and forgot to put some back in. His truck ran fine after that and had over 200k miles on it at the time. Toyota engine are usually pretty stout so hopefully no harmful damage was done.

The 22R was a tractor motor. Nothing could kill it. Dont expect the same from our 4.0.

Meh, in 13 year of ownership, I had one o2 sensor go out that the dealer comped and they replaced the front rotors and pads because they were noisy at 25K. It also had the ball joint recall which they did without issue. I wheeled the hell out of it dune running and never broke a thing. I will say I maintain my vehicles well but if my Taco does as well over time, I'd be mighty happy.

And it still had a frame under it after 13 years....

After reading 21 pages all I have to add is put my name on the "new motor" side of the list. As new as your truck is unless it has a shit ton of miles on it already the dealership owes you a new Toyota Factory motor. Nothing more (no "lifetime" warranty BS), nothing less. These things happen, right or wrong and as such dealerships have a responsibility to make them right. OP I'm sorry to say but the whole "November 1st" bullshit is just that, bullshit! The service manager is trying to cover his ass with the corporate bean counters. Call him Monday morning and tell him you've done your research and your not comfortable with his "solution" and stand your ground on a new motor. If he refuses then hang up, call back to the main number and ask to speak to the GM at the dealership. I'm betting he/she has no knowledge of this incident and needs to be brought up to speed.

20 some years ago my company purchased a new Peterbilt truck to pull the helicopter trailer with. I went to Minnesota to pick it up and while inside signing paperwork the truck sitting outside idling (it was -10) the engine ate itself. Peterbilt and Caterpillar offered to "rebuild" the motor. I was livid as was the company president. It took several weeks of lawyers making threats but finally Caterpillar shipped a brand new motor and paid the dealership to change it. Upon opening the old motor it was discovered there was 1/2 of a valve keeper that could not be found in the motor anywhere which caused it to drop a valve which punctured a piston. Now this motor only had 27 miles on it which is a little different than your situation but all I can say is stand your ground.

OP, not sure if you are in Colorado, but a few posts in the thread seem to indicate you are. If so, please let me know the name of the dealership because I want to ensure I never go there for anything. PM is fine if you do not feel comfortable disclosing publicly.
    Thank you.

This is a difficult position.. Would you want to buy a "newer" truck that shows a replaced engine early on its record? I would be a little weary.

I would push for swapping vehicles.

You knowingly drove it with the oil light on makes you partially liable for the damage. They will play that card when push comes to shove. Bottom line is they forgot the oil in a OIL CHANGE!
Hope it works out for you.
You can pull a oil sample and send it in for testing by a third party.

Agreed, late for work doesn't trump 35k investment going farther down the shitter. They were at fault initially. I would have had them eat some more cost by sending a wrecker to tow it back to dealership in that case because I bet they will try to play the partially liable card for driving it back with the light on. +2 on engine replacement. Heads can be damaged too not just block. Cams need oil on their bearings so this isn't just a lower end thing. Are they gonna hand you a check for diminished value on top of putting in new long block & giving you lifetime drivetrain warranty? If not are they going to swap you into another truck? If not yes, then call a lawyer would be my suggestion.......

I don't know, they had to drive it out of the repair bay and onto the parking lot, so one could argue that the tech new the light was on and knowingly returned the truck to the owner.

On the flip, what would the dealer recommend to a customer who did a DIY oil change and forgot to add oil after draining the oil and driving it X miles to the dealership?
