So I hated carrying the RTT out on the trails on the truck. Adding more top heavy weight isn't something that I like since the Taco is already tall. Got to talking with the buddy who owns the fab shop that did my SAS and we decided a trailer build was ready to commence.

First I looked around and got some ideas. Thanks @Mademan925 and @Milota95 I've looked at your builds too much in the past few months.
Then just decided to place an order on etrailer.com
We decided to build the axle from scratch. I bought some spindles, 6x5.5 hubs to match the truck, lights, stabilizer jacks, the hitch, and the tongue jack.

    IMG_20160725_192256.jpg

We decided on a 5x7 box to ensure that the RTT wasn't hanging off the edge and to make sure that I had enough room to store a couple coolers, sleeping gear, tools, spare parts, grill, etc.
I'm also running an old set of my 35" MTRs on some old 16" wheels.

    IMG_20160805_165906.jpg

I decided I wanted to use the trailer for a weekend camping at the state park with friends so we loaded the tent on and I used it as a skeleton.

    IMG_20160806_102918.jpg

I'm using some 1978 CJ5 springs. They're rated for 780#s each which I'm hoping is good enough. If not I plan to throw in an add a leaf.

We stopped working on this thing for about 2 months and decided to pick it back up. Hoping that I'll have it "done" before the event at AOP on October 15th.

We got one side put on. You can see how we're going to tackle the door. I'm putting two doors across from each other in the front, one big door on the back that swings open with a fold down table and 2 drawers in the middle.

    IMG_20160920_202757.jpg

I think we need to brace the trailer where we have the tongue stopping so that it won't have the option to fold up on itself under extreme force but we didn't think it was necessary as we laid the big 3x3 tongue tube. Hindsight is 2020.

Here's some extra pics. We have since put the other side on and framed the other door in. My buddy made these fenders from scratch. It was pretty cool to see that come together.

    IMG_20160920_202819.jpg

These springs are already kind of flat but the added weight didn't help. I'll probably end up putting the AAL on and not worrying about it. I'm also curious if I run a shock from the axle to the brace at the shackle would it be too steep of an angle for the shock.

    To be continued..

Got to work on the trailer more this past week.

-Framed out the two side and rear doors.
-Added some slick braces for the trailer so that it can't pivot on that point under extreme stresses.

this has changed a lot since the last post. pretty much decided to sell the tent and build the trailer as a camper to sleep inside. it involved a few changes. added some A/C, a RV style power converter (DC and A/C power), kitchen area, raised height, leveler jacks, aluminum skin outside, full XL mattress inside.

    IMG_20170830_141802.jpg

did some autocad work to get an idea of what i wanted.

    IMG_20171001_183437.jpg

started cutting the old trailer apart and adding where it needed

    IMG_20180416_194817.jpg

all put together. ready for sanding and paint

    IMG_20180609_184823.jpg

painted ready for flooring / walls / insulation

Love it! I've gotten hooked on these tiny campers. We decided to buy the basic camper ready to camp so we cold get out there and make changes as we go. We've only had it a little over a year and have concentrated on what it takes to be self sufficient. We reached that point this year and have been enjoying the hell out of it. Next year will be a possible suspension upgrade and matching wheels to the truck (already have another set of Tundra wheels). These things are so fun and a fantastic base camp. I do fab work for a living so with all the rain this year I kinda went nuts. we bought a fridge for Christmas last year which snowballed into a whole bunch of things from extending the tongue and instaling a Lock n roll to solar and dual batteries. Cool build!

nice! I like that! I would love to do fab work for a living. It's always been a hobby I enjoy most. The next go round I'll build the camper with the end goal in mind instead of working with something I had already started. I'm still working on some small things with mine but once i'm done I play on camping in it at least 1 weekend a month. I still need to finish the rear kitchen area and add some cabinets. then I wanna do the lock n roll as well and install my rock lights on all the corners for night lighting. And finally I'd like to vent the AC outside somehow so that i can shut the kitchen door at night.

    I appreciate the kind words!
