I have seen this question asked quite a few times on here with mixed answers and it made me curious so I did the research.

According to most manufacturers including McGard, the minimum thread engagement for a lug nut should be equal to the diameter of the stud width.

Example: A 12mm x 1.5 lug nut would mean you'd need 12mm (.473") of thread engagement. Obviously more is better, but essentially a half inch of thread contact is enough clamping force to satisfy safe wheel attachment.

I just wanted to pass that information along for those guys concerned about safe wheel mounting. Toyota is weird in using shank style lugs when other makers use acorn or ball which does allow for more thread engagement with factory wheels but adds complication when switching to aftermarket wheels with acorn seats.

Hope this helps answer those questioning their wheel purchases and safe operation.

I am surprised no one thanked you for sharing confirmatory information on an important subject as such... I, for one, was not exactly sure of 'minimum thread engagement' and so, on behalf of Tacoma World, thank you... albeit more than two years later!:cheers:

All the more reasons to use extended thread lug nuts for more engagement.
