I live in bay area where used tacomas are selling at a premium. I have found a 2004 tacoma 4x4 v6 extra cab with 118k. Belts and water pump have NOT been replaced. everything is stock with new tires. Guy is asking 13k. What do u think a fair price is? Thanks

In my opinion, 13k is a bit steep. But a stock 4x4 (auto or manual), TRD will hold its value in SoCal. Try lowing it to 10k or 11k? Got pics?

I would pay 12K and spent the other 1K doing the differed maintenance. Prices all over CA/AZ/OR/WA are pretty high and inline for 1st gen.

Look around here for info but a few things of concern would be the frame rust issue (lots of info on that here, but depending on where the truck spent it's life might not be an issue for you) and the condition of the ball joints.

    ...we'll get there.
any chance you can travel a bit to get one? if you can find low-rust outside of your immediate area you can see a lot of savings. ...and you get a road trip out of it.

otherwise that sounds about right for what other people are paying around there. are you doing the maintenance yourself? belts and water pump aren't that difficult if you've got a weekend to blow. I paid $250 for my OEM timing belt job kit...included water pump, pulleys, gaskets, thermostat and accessory belts.

Just find one which is in good physical shape. Yeah the timing belt and water pump are past due but there are members on here with 180k+ on their original set up. I've spent more money on fixing worn asthetic parts (Paint, seats, trim etc) then I have on anything mechanical. Fluids are cheap and easy if you're willing to wrench myself. My Mechanic quoted me $300 to do the timing belt and water pump provided I bring the parts. As others have said, use it as a bargaining chip.

I think the balljoint issue is a little overblown. Yes the effects are dramatic but most of the threads I see in regards to the issue on here has been on a lifted truck or instances where they were recently replaced with cheap parts.

If the truck is clean and rust free, considering the miles, it probably isn't a terrible deal. Although at that price, as you put on more miles the truck will depreciate a bit more. 200K+ trucks in good shape command less then 10K typically.

That's a $9,500 truck here with the low miles.

I paid 13.3 for my '98 Limited. Has all the bells and whistles, though. Shell, brand new Bilstein 5100, crapet kit, diff lock, 4x4. Had 105k miles on it when I got it. I thought I got a good deal, but I should've talked him down to 11 or 12.

Probably a 4banger with the TRD package, those didn't get the locking differential if I remember right. Rare finds, but they're out there.

except he stated in OP that it is a V6 :D

@oiny69 it looks pretty clean but get frame pics and service/carfax(if you can or care) istory to see if any parts were replaced.

It's hard to tell from the side view with the interior dimmer knob blocking what would be the locking diff button

Ah you're right, the RR Diff lock button is on the other side of the knob and I can sort of make out what looks like the top of the button behind that knob.
