IMO, unless you want that "hissing" noise or slightly louder, aftermarket CAI is a waste of money for 1st Gens when you can do the deck plate mod.

After I deck plated and added AFE Pro Dry filter, I gained 1-2 mpg and *THOUGHT* I felt better throttle response. But I'm totally down with placebo effect, it's awesome.

i'm thinking of looking for a TRD CAI, if i can find one, for my 2.7l 4banger. i asked a couple dealerships, and was told that for the '03's (mine), you can't order them new from toyota anymore. is that so, and what about looking for a used one? are there reasons to not buy a used trd CAI? if no CAI regardless of brand, would the "deckplate mod" cause any issue with reliability?

I've been considering turning mine into a CAI. My OEM housing is broken and from what I've been reading it breaks even if I get a new one. So I was thinking why keep replacing it or fixing it if its going to keep breaking. Arm that sticks out of the box snapped off. Epoxyed it and it just recently broke again. I have duct tape holding it right now lol. And the prev owner put holes in the front of the box, thinking it would get more air I guess lol. I live in New Orleans so its relatively warm here and was trying to see if that would effect the CAI in any way. I don't do off-roading. Most of any off-roading I will do is going to the city landfill. Would it be better for me to keep the OEM one or get a CAI?

I'd go CAI. I just don't understand why there is so much hate all
    Around it.

I like my K&N CAI and it works very well with my supercharged 2.7 4cyl . I've wrapped my CAI tube with a 4" sleeve of thermal heat barrier sleeving from DEI . Also used extra foam material to completely seal all hot air from getting to the filter

Get a hole saw and cut a big hole in your housing. Buy a boat deck plate to plug the hole and you're right back where you started.

With the hole open its louder under the hood, with it closed its quieter. it doesnt really do anything else but you get the self satisfaction of having wasted an afternoon. it was easier when cars were carb'd. You would just flip the air filter lid upside down to give it a full opening to suck air instead of the just the stock opening, and then marvel at the hp increase the placebo effect gave you. Now you need tools and parts to do the same.

I have had NO complaints after 19 years with 510,000 miles with my v6 supercharger using this system. Will pay for its self and Never buy another AIRFILTER,
AIRFILTER was replaced 2 times under warranty because the rubber housing part became
    disformed with all the miles.
If you have a supercharger I would definitely say to get one and remove the elbow
and fender air houseing holder for the elbow.

Dyno test to back up differant airbox mods. Appears the best one is to remove elbow out of the fender whell. Adds around 6 HP.
K&N filters actually hurt power over paper type.

no reason to drop money on a CAI that does nothing. If you want noise just remove the silencer boxes and plug them. I used to like a noisy V6 truck in my younger years but now when I hear one I think it's just tacky.

Right after I bought the truck new in 1997 about 6 months later, maybe 10,000 after I bought the truck or less, I was one of the very 1st buyers of the TRD supercharger, truck has 515,000 miles now and runs like new believe it or not
