    Yup, in terms of having to use the timeout to avoid losing 10 seconds when play is under 60 seconds.

    Looking at the rest of that half, and yes it's always easy to hypothesize..but methinks they'd have had one more shot at the end zone with that timeout they had to burn

    I understand that but this was a mistake by the refs, there was no infraction for illegal forward pass. How can taking 10 seconds or a time out from Tennessee justify a mistake by the refs ?

    Nah, at least that one somewhat makes sense. This one is not even in the same arena because it's basically the refs telling the Titans "we fkd up and you have to pay for it..says the rule"

    Fortunately it didn't affect the final outcome but if the Titans had lost by 2-3 pts yikes.

    I'll never forget that game. The refs huddled for quite a while on how to hand it to the Patriots til one of them pulled the tuck rule out of his ass. The Raiders were not supposed to win that one.

    I remember the next offseason the refs were going over the rules with the Raiders at training camp. When they got to that rule a few Raiders stood up and left the room..including one (name escapes me) who was on the Patriots the prior year. Someone told one of the Pats and the guy said "was he wearing his Super Bowl ring when that happened?"

    The Jets benefited from the exact same scenario (with the exact same call and ruling) earlier that same season, against the Pats, and nobody cared. But if a rule benefits the Pats, the refs are in their pocket.

    I agree that it was a stupid rule, and so did the league, since they voted it out. It would definitely be considered a fumble now, but it wasn't considered to be one then. That was the rule at the time so the refs went with it. :notsure:
