Ok, serious question here: are school lunches at the schools in your area bad? I don't mean just food your kids (or yourself) just simply don't like, but are they repulsive and/or unhealthy?

These are 2 photos from a friend of mine when they went to visit and have lunch with their son at the Primary School in my hometown. It is disgusting and embarrassing.

EDIT: THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SMALL BOWL OF CHILI WITH THIS LUNCH (not that that fixes anything..)

    14590259_1122135801173534_5249083376153363803_n.jpg 14720402_1122135794506868_7126191692973081187_n.jpg

Don't our kids deserve better? Didn't Michelle Obama say she was going to make kids healthier?

I know this could simply be my local school system, and some people are trying to get things changed. Has anybody ever had success getting something like this changed in their school system?

Edit: let me add that our city went "wet" a few years back with the intention of nearly all of the tax money going to our school systems. one man who opened a beer store made enough money in his first 3 weekends to completely pay off all of his debt and simply be profitable. the city then in turn kept putting the tax money into "savings" instead of giving it to the school system. this same man only opened his beer store with the intention of all of his tax earnings going to the schools, and was pissed when they didn't. he donated some huge amount or something if I remember correctly. I say this because, our schools/city earn TONS of money but don't spend it right. disclaimer: I don't know full story, only stating what I read from local paper.

I have to say....I would be embarrassed/ashamed by that too.
I work at a school and our lunches look nothing like that...and we are considered a ghetto school.
Always fruits and veggies, whole grains, hot meals. Sometimes great soup. Always salad with fresh lettuce and veggies. I kinda like eating at my school. Best deal in town actually. (and the lunch ladies like me )

I bet prisoners eat better than that. Sadly though, in a way we reap what we sow. People are usually too cheap to pay for schools in tax increases, and the money has to come from somewhere.

I used to love eating the lunches at my schools (the same schools this lunch was served). Our school system (not trying to brag) is a wealthy school system, they just prioritize their money in the wrong places, like flat screens in all the hallways. I just don't understand it.

The prisoners I used to lock up over the weekend ate McDonald's, KFC. Sad to see anything like that served at a school.

Our lunches have adopted the Michelle Obama program to Nth degree! some of the meals are actually pretty Damn good given the restrictions. The district actually brought in some local high end chefs to put together some tasty meals given the ingredients that our school has access to through the healthy meals initiative. kinda like the way the run that TV show Chopped. Those chefs came up with some really good ideas.

Hm. I haven't done my research on the Michelle Obama programs, but I would assume that my local schools haven't adopted that (probably never will since we are in Alabama lol).

Never seen a comparable lunch in my area.

    Seems like a district problem.

Nope, around here this is chili day. The "cheese bread" is basically just to dip in the chili, not intended to be grilled cheese. The "fruit cup" which was always disgusting is supposed to satisfy the fruit portion of the meal. We call them tater tots down here, if that's what you're calling "potato puffs" (WTF is a potato puff?)

Lol, one in the same. we have a chili day as well but never heard of cheese bread besides Texas toast. (Not a school thing) every lunch is served with a salad though. not the best selections of dressings but if you bring in your own you could dress up the meals pretty Damn good.
It's unfortunate that some districts are so far behind the local or even national initiatives.

Salad? Who's heard of such a thing at schools? Really though, I never remember getting a salad at school lunch except for a few pieces of lettuce and a small tomato slice on rectangle pizza day, right beside the corn.

Rectangle pizza day...memories. Anyway, my nephew's school lunch was so terrible he wasn't eating it and came home starving all the time. We ended up packing his lunches after my mom saw the slop they called lunch at his school. Not sure if it's changed since he's also changed school since then but I feel bad for those kids. Some of those free lunch kids the school breakfast and lunch are the best meals they get and it's still garbage.

I personally liked the rectangle pizza lol! Yes, I feel horrible for the kids that that's the best meal they get in a day. I wouldn't send my kids (if I ever have any) to eat this lunch, but that being said I want to know if I am unable to provide them a lunch for whatever reason that the school has something adequate (close to what I would provide them) for them to eat.
