What this mod does is add an audio/video input to OEM touch screens. With a video input you can add a cellphone mirror device, dvd player, or any other video input device.

You may find these parts useful:
    1. 28 pin connector
    2. 16 pin connector
    3. Connector Receptacles
    4. 3.5mm Female RCA Adapter
    5. HDMI to RCA Adapter
Use the fallowing diagram. Just make note that the positions are numbered as if you are looking at the front of the connector. You need to mirror the positions if you're looking at the connector from the back where you insert the receptacles. Also note that the audio left, right, and ground tap into the exiting 3.5mm aux input. I simply soldered the new audio wires to the existing ones, but you could use a wire tap or something equivalent.

If you have a 2014-2015 or even 2016 (probably) you only need to wire the 28 pin connector. 2012-2013 models require an additional jumper on the 16 pin connector where the backup camera is located. If you want to be able to use the video feed while the truck is moving than you may want to wire a switch on the speed connector wire. If you don't use or you have a non navigation head unit than there really is no use for the speed sensor wire and you can disconnected it... just don't do anything dumb like watch a movie while doing 80 down the freeway.

I used a 3.5mm RCA adapter and just cut the 3.5mm plug end off. When it's all said and done it looks something like this:

And if you want an HDMI input radio shack makes a nice adapter but it will set you back about $40

That's all there is to it. If you try this mod, let me know how it goes. I'd be interested to know what people will connect to their radio. Chromecast might be kind of cool.

I just pre-ordered the mimics G4 device which might be the next best thing paired with my wifi phone mirror device. I'll update and see how it goes. If your using an iPhone I believe it has to be jailbroken to work with the Mimic G4 but should be straight forward for android devices.

I got an update last week that their outer case supplier is behind by two weeks so they expect to ship them out in 3 weeks.

I should clarify, it will take two weeks from them to receive the out cases and a week to ship out the units to us.

Edit: they also made this video

So how does this work? Can you switch it from your device back to your radio or does it only work when plugged in or what? Really cool idea by the way just curious

The best way to do it is to order the touch screen switch with the G4 than wire a switch somewhere on your dash or something, then just use that switch to jump between controlling your phone and controlling your OEM unit.

I replaced my old pre 2012 tacoma steering wheel with a 4runner and it has an extra switch labeled DSP on the right side below the phone controls as shown here:

I plan to use that switch to jump back and forth between controlling the G4 and my factory head unit. Once I get everything in and tested I'll try to do a thorough and proper write up similar to the other mods I have done in the past.

    Neat. Seems super simple.

So this allows you to mirror what ever is plugged into the HDMI port? You can control phone apps via the OEM radiow now correct? Still while controlling the volume via the OEM radio knob?

Do you have a switch to turn this on/off or when you disconnect the phone does it automatically go back the OEM radio screen?

Lastly, it seems as simple as radio plugs -> female RCA -> male RCA -> female HDMI plug. Then from the female HDMI plug, you run a male HDMI to
    Apple plug, correct?

You have to select the display input on the OEM radio just like you would a bluetooth device. If you jump the two pairs of pins like I show in the diagram the you will see a new source option appear next to the bluetooth option that will say A/V. If you connected your ipod like you said then it will display on the screen. You will also be able to control the volume via the radio knob just like you would a bluetooth input.

The G4 minic device is completely separate from the display. It works via bluetooth with your phone. If you purchase the touch screen switch board with it (highly recommended), then connect the OEM touch screen to that, then you can wire a switch that will let you choose which device (OEM Radio or the G4) the touch screen will control.

I hope that makes sense. Keep in mind that you can also use a Wifi wireless mirror device to display your phone on the radio. I have seen some on ebay go for about as much as the over priced lightning to HDMI adapter. Also the RCA to HDMI adapter isn't cheap either. Luckily I had one from a different project that I wasn't using anymore. Otherwise you're looking at about $100 to get both. You could also connect other things like a remote DVD player or anything with an RCA output. The mimic G4 device is really just to give you that next level of control. I have been using this mod with my phone for a while now and honestly I am really not sure if it is worth the trouble to install the G4. If you don't mind using the touch screen on your phone you can easily get a wifi mirror device on ebay for around $50 and be done. Then again I'm not really one to just settle, I'll know more once I receive the G4.

Gotcha. So it adds another selectable input to the radio just like just bluetooth or AM/FM. Makes sense.

The G4 is the only option that allows you to control the phone via the touch screen on the radio, correct? Using the HDMI or the mirror box only mirrors the phones display but not the controls, correct?

This is the type of mirror box youre referring to, correct? http://www.tomtop.com/car-a-v-insta...=en&aid=gpla&gclid=CL_nuaWv5tACFU9MDQodYvkP3g

Seems simple enough. Connect the A/V RCA input to the factory wiring then connect the RCAs the mirror box.

You got it, everything you said is correct. There are a few versions of those mirror boxes. I have only used the ones that come straight from China and my feeling toward them are mixed at best. They work and they are cheap but sometimes the video has short pauses. Just be aware because they are a pain in the ass to return.

This is the actual one I got: http://m.ebay.com/itm/Car-WiFi-Disp...%3Af1e2f1791580a2af66464192ffde9bbc%7Ciid%3A1

The position of the antenna seems to matter. I haven't found a perfect place to install it yet. For now it's just stuffed behind the radio. I think I might try putting it in the center console under the cup holders or something since that's pretty close to where I put my phone. For the most part it works flawlessly especially for navigation but it might get a little annoying if you plan to watch a movie on it because of the micro freezes.

Cool. Is there a benefit of running the RCA to HDMI to the wifi box? Or can I just go RCA to wifi box?

    Thanks for the help

Awesome. My RCA cables showed up today. Hopefully I can find the time to get the harness built now. Then I can order a wifi box

$550 minimum purchase on those connectors? I'll pay some $20 for 3 of them.
