Hi - 2016 Tacoma Limited here. I'm looking to get a remote start, and I really like the Viper 2-way system. My Tacoma has the proximity key which means the door will auto-unlock when I grab the handle, as long as the key is in my pocket. Does anybody know if the Viper (or any other 3rd party remote start) retains this feature? It seems like a step backwards to spend $600 on a system that makes me have to use my key every time I want to unlock the doors. Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure there was a thread about this a few weeks ago. I'm interested in the same thing but would like to have an OEM option instead of aftermarket. I want to stick with the stock FOB's.

I found something in my searching but it didn't address the proximity unlock. It does look like the Viper offers a PKE (Proximity Keyless Entry) option but I don't know if it costs extra or what. I'm still digging.

I like the idea of an OEM remote start but the two-way features of the Viper seem really good, and I don't want something that's going to shut my motor off each time I open the door.

Yes there is, I had the dealership add remote start to mine before I took delivery. They use the factory remote start that is available on the 4runner. I have same fob, I press lock button to start. I believe they were going to charge $600 for system and install, lucky for me they forgot to add it on my paper work so I got it free. Just go to toyota website, 4runner accessories and you can get an idea of it.

I called my 2 local dealers to ask about it but neither showed one for the Tacoma. I didn't ask about one for the 4Runner though.

They won't show one for the tacoma, ask them about the 4runner one. Like I said above on my earlier post go to toyota website, then down to model, then 4runner, hit build then go to accessories that is what is on my truck, it's the same fob as the one you have. This is not the first thread on this, I have posted what I have on my truck as far as remote starters. I was told on one of the other threads I was pretty much lying, I'm not trying to impress anyone and I can not believe my dealership in KC is the only dealership in the country that knows about doing this! I guess I am one lucky oldman!

Thanks guys - Oldman52, does it shut the engine off when you open the door? I got a quote on a Viper 5706v two-way system for $650 installed. I haven't confirmed yet that it does the proximity stuff, but if it does, that's pretty close to the OEM price, so I may go with that.

I recall seeing your post in that other thread but I kinda skimmed through it. Some dealers will do more for you than others will or what's convenient for them.

    Thanks for the info.

I got the Viper 2-way installed, and whenever I open a door it shuts off. The place that installed it said that was the only option. They would have been able to do some magic and have the factory fob work (lock 3 times to remote start), but it would still shut off if any doors were opened. I didn't want to wear out my remote, so I got the 2 way and really like the features I got with it.
