Distracted driving...? I was using a hands free Bluetooth. Not distracted eyes on the road. If you think I was too close...watch the video again...watch my reaction time if you think I was distracted. Simple fact is that these trucks will not stop as fast as a car, especially on the highway.

If the vehicle in front of me hadn't brake checked the car behind him, none of this would have happened.

And good luck taking me to jail for that...seriously... :oldglory:

As someone who installs cameras in coach buses for a living, i see a few issues with using a Go Pro as a replacement for a dedicated dash cam set up. yes it will record while your driving, but thats about it.

a few features you would want out a dash camera are:
-G Motion Sensor(someone hits you or you need to slam on the brakes hard the camera will create an event file)
    -Infrared night video
-ability to download video without pulling the SD card.
-parking mode(camera records for certain amount of time after car is off and parked then shuts off. handy for when a shopping cart or car hits you in a parking lot. or a shop damages your vehicle.)
    -front and rear cameras

I am sure their are more i cant think of

Also i do not have any stake in any companies but i have found that the Thinkware F750 or F770 are some of the best dash cameras available to you now.

the ignorance is strong in this one.
you realize that if you know you're in a vehicle that has a longer stopping distance then you should be keeping a greater distance.
Doesn't matter if its hands free your attention was on the phone call not the road.

I just find it funny you're saying this is the other drivers fault when if you did hit the guy and tried to use this video you'd be ruled as at fault. You rear end someone you are almost always at fault unless you have video that someone cut you off and slammed on the brakes. This video shows you behind the guy the whole time.

Honestly dude, I give you credit for avoiding that and swerving to do so...but to think this is the other driver's fault is just stupid. Accept it you were following to closely. THE WHOLE POINT OF KEEPING DISTANCE IS IF SOMEONE STOPS SUDDENLY. If you weren't following to closely, the guy shouldn't be able to brake check you. It doesn't matter what he did if you were to hit that guy you would've been at fault.

If you weren't too close you wouldn't have had to swerve to avoid hitting him. Your reaction timing was perfect yes, but you were still following too closely. If you can't realize that dude...you should not be driving, you're a danger to other motorist.
If you had hit the guy and tried to use this as your argument that you aren't at fault...they'd probably laugh at you in court. Good lawyer would argue if you weren't following to close and weren't on the phone you would have had more attention on the road and would not have hit them. Dude I'm only saying this because I've been in court as a witness for a few accidents now...there is no court that wouldn't find you at fault for something like that.
    GPS is nice too.
The DOD tech camera I have, has software with it for your computer and when you load a file from the camera into the software it brings up a google maps window as well and shows you the route of the car.
Shows the speed the car was doing
and shows the G motion if the car had hard acceleration or braking.

Lol. Geese...didn't realize you were a witness to an accident broseph, sorry...I'll hand over my license because those 45,000miles a year I drive I'm such a danger to the public. If only I had known sooner...so many lives could have been spared...

You were tailgating like an idiot. There is zero excuse for tailgating as you were. Let's not miss the fact that we're viewing a wide-angle camera's video that distorts the picture and makes the vehicle in front look considerably further ahead than it was.

If the truck "will not stop as fast as a car," then you need to be holding a larger following distance. Knowingly driving a vehicle in a fashion that you know will not let you stop safely (as you were) is incredibly dumb (and I'm being kind here).

The whole point of keeping a proper following distance is to give yourself time to stop in case the unexpected happens - ie. what happened in front of you. I'll give you props for swerving as you did, but you could not stop in time because you were way, way too close to car in front.

// edit - scrolled up and I see @Joe23 already wrote exactly the same thing and you ignored it. As you were; natural selection will catch up sooner than later.

Yeah, the crazy "Mericans" . crashed our immigration server for the second time...(thinking of coming to Canada).. Not sure when it will be up and running again...
I, for one will be asking that we (Canucks) Test those "Mericans" to see if they "agree with the Cdn values" we have up here..(leave the guns at home).. if not we'll deport them..

    Buy a name brand.
Don't use a GoPro, not the best choice, it works if that's all you have.
    Something is better than nothing.
Post a video and Canadians will ridicule you.

That's the important parts of the thread in summation.

This is off of my G1W that's still in my truck. One more reason not to follow to close. Night video quality could certainly be better. But it works, and Instagram compresses it too mind you.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BMpj-gkjRMa/?taken-by=brettnelz

I recently just purchased a Z-Edge Z3 for my Camaro and it seems to be much higher quality than my G1W, I'd swap it for the one in my truck but I ran the cables behind the A pillar and they aren't the same (Mini-USB on G1W vs Micro-USB on Z3). It will record at 2560x1080 so it's really wide angle plus WDR. Though I wish it had a 60fps option that wasn't 720p. It was a tad under $100 so it was 2x the price of the G1W.

Only negatives on my G1W would be night video quality where most can struggle, and the battery now lasts about 30 seconds unplugged and will reset the date if I don't drive the truck for a few days. So the date stamp can become a bit useless. Otherwise it's been used for nearly two years as I got it in Jan 1 of 2015 for my Tundra. Never missed a clip with it.

I bought one of these Novatek's:

    https://www.amazon.com/CiBest-Capac...&qid=1478974124&sr=8-1&keywords=A118C+Novatek

I reduced the voltage with this 5V converter:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C63TLCC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I sprayed it black and velcroed it to my headliner next to the windshield.

It's wired into the mirror with one of these since I didn't want to run the wires all the way back under the dash:

    https://www.amazon.com/Radar-Mount-Mirror-Detectors-3005201/dp/B00RA38X4K

I've pulled both day and night videos from it and I'm happy. It sits there chugging away. Right now I've got the audio recording turned off but I might turn that feature back on.

    SB

p.s. It looks like it's the same camera as the Street Guardian SG9665GC in that other link but much cheaper.

Adapted my Z-Edge Z3 to the GoPro mount and ran the power cable to the center console. Awesome little setup that I don't even notice. Hope I never really have to use it for any evidence.

    Fixed that for you.

Based on the video timestamps as the car and you passed the light poles, you were following with a roughly 1 second gap at 65+mph. General rule of thumb is to keep a two second gap; *especially* if your vehicle doesn't stop as quickly as others might.

Had there been a crash it'd have been 100% your fault. Doesn't matter if someone up ahead brake-checked someone else.

It is very good, also look at the Thinkware F770

I did this with the GoPro and wiring.

Took the tow bolts off the handle and ran the wire inside the trim down the inside of the door jam through the glove box and around and into my USB hub. No drilling or cutting

You can get these little adhesive clips off of Amazon. Work pretty well.
