Does anyone know if the newer r156f transmission from the 2.7l third gen's is compatible with 2.7l 2nd gen's that came with a r155f transmission? My transmission is going to need a rebuild pretty soon but considering the newer transmission for the slight improvements and better gear ratios for oversized tires. I tried searching TW and google but couldn't find anything about backwards compatability.

What's wrong with your current transmission?

Nothing too bad. Mostly an input shaft whine and a rattling throwout bearing. I'm not itching to pull it, but researching options for the day it decides to give up on life.

Probably just be easier to regear it if you want the lower gears, probably be pretty expensive for a new trans or a trans from that new of a vehicle at a junk yard.

The r156f and the r155f use the same housing.

Whats the difference in the ratios? I've heard it has better 1st gear syncros.

I'd love those ratios, way better for starting off on a boat launch!

The more I think about this, the more I'd like to do this swap. Definitely would appreciate the lower first and second gears. I'd have a hard time pulling my tranny since it hasn't given me any trouble, but it's still tempting. I wonder if I'd be able to sell my r155f in good condition to recoup some of the cost.

If I remember correctly the first gear on the R156f has a triple cone synchronizer where as the R155f does not.

Anybody do this swap yet? My r155f is starting to make some noise.
