I watched some show with a similar guy being interviewed. He had a new Ferrari, red and a convertible. He lived in an old mobile home.

He claimed to swim in tail thanks to his car and never, ever brought a girl home as obviously, it didn't fit the image he was portraying with the car.

Hah that's crazy, I had no idea you were on this forum Mr. Volk! Guess I've been hanging out in the 3rd gen section too much. (This is Kyle, Tom & Rose's son.)
For the TW members now scratching their heads, my parents met Devious6 via a BMW Z3 club ages ago, before I even had a driver's license.

Anyways, back on topic. I'm going to be moving to Phoenix AZ soon, and there's just not any reasonable way for me to get into a house immediately. I have a hefty down payment saved up, I own my Taco free and clear, but my initial plan was to rent an apartment until I'm in a better month-to-month financial state, and possibly splitting costs with a housemate. It's been tough for me, my path has taken me directly into industries that get a swift kick in the dick with the worst possible timing (financial biz circa 2008, Auto industry/SAAB parts circa 2011...) and I've gotten laid off which is a really sucky way to go, especially since it is so tough to find a new job. So I wouldn't immediately say every renter is making an irresponsible choice, it's just a matter of circumstance sometimes.

Must be a West Coast thing. In my neighborhood, 7 out of 24 homes have a Tacoma sitting in their garage/driveway. Can anyone else's neighborhood beat a 29% Taco ownership ratio?

I have a modest house in an expensive area That I paid off several years ago. I worked a ton of overtime back then , attacked the principle, and started to see the balance of the mortgage start snowballing down. Ended up paying it off in 9 years.
I just don't like owing a bank, mortgage company or anybody.
I've been a saver all my life. Don't get me wrong, I still buy stuff. When I did buy something for myself,I bought quality that would last me a while.
Pay cash for most things. Every vehicle, boat, snowmobile or whatever ,I paid cash. When I use a CC, I pay it off right away. Never paid interest on a CC.
Never even used an ATM. Don't even know how, but I've seemed to manage.
My accountant thinks I'm an oddity and a throwback in todays world.
    That's OK, been called worse.,lol.

    You are doing excellent. Kudos.

You need a new accountant. Most accountants are like you, and would appreciate a client like you.

Hey, Kyle!!! This world is way too small!!! You guys need to come up to shoot again before you move!!! Will you be at your parent's holiday party next month?

I wholly with you that renting is, for many, the right option for myriad reason. We all have different priorities in life and what works for me isn't necessarily what will work for someone else. They key is to have a plan and start saving/investing for the future as early as possible.

Im 26 and have been renting since I was 17, I'm buying a home come spring. The reason I own a newer truck is simple, I have no where to work on an older vehicle and need something dependable to get to work. A car does not suit my lifestyle at all. I'm really looking forward to owning a house and getting away from newer 4x4s all together.

I got pissed off with the prices here and with the fact that a guy making $80 000 a year, living a modest lifestyle, could only afford a 1970's wood frame 2 bedroom apartment. So I said fuck it and bought a decent newer taco, my dream truck.

Then I realized that I had accumulated nearly $100 000 after saving and investing for 10 years and I just wrote a contract for a sweet brand new concrete 2 bedroom apartment in the best part of downtown. It will be expensive but it's right for me.

Owning a real house anywhere near town is either impossible or would be stressful buying a dump and having to constantly fix roofs and drain tiles while under severe mortgage payment pressure.

I don't have any yardwork or repairs to do for years and years and I can count on making the same payment every month. Which is worth it to me.
